I feel like I am much more depressed than I am manic. I was recently started on Lithium. Is it supposed to help prevent the depressive episodes? Or does it just bring you down from mania?

How long should it take for it to work?

Thanks

lithium is a mood stabilizer but I know some people who have to take an antidepressant with it.
What does your pdoc say?

Like bizi said it is a mood stabilizer and is used to stabilize both mania and depressive moods. You may require additional medication in conjunction with the lithium or some other medication all together. Bipolar depression is a bit different than just depression in how medication works on it. A lot of people with bipolar find that antidepressants don't work at all, work only mildly, or send them into an episode. I take both a med that is used as a mood stabilizer plus an antidepressant.

HI Razz, hope you are doing better,

I have been taking Lithium for quite some time. It helps with my mixed episodes (depression and mania). I have found it to be a very effective drug.

Good luck
