After many years of finding good jobs only to walk out or get fired, Im parellized by the thought of repeating the cycle. Currently, Im currently unemployed and trying to build up the strength to get back out there. Does anyone have ideas or past experiences which might help? I seem to be able to make the best impression but when they look up the ol criminal record and see that Ive multi DUI's I dont get an offer. Many times Ive been told they need someone to start next week or in a few days. Ive been handed employment papers to fill out pending their phone call with a starting date. They all but give me the keys to the office. It's been over ten years since my last DUI (which the courts found me not guilty), but the pattern proves too much for these companies to invest in me. Is there any way to explain this past behavior honestly and convience them I "had" a drinking problem due to BPD, but I have that part of my life together and dont drink any longer? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

hey there, 10 years should be plenty of time to be "wiped" from your record. In Australia, 7 years is the amount of time that a criminal record is active, providing you have a conviction. I also have a record. It is against the law now for an employer to apply for records outside of the jurisdiction of the job. If you were applying for the police, armed forces, security, working with children, NSA, CIA or FBI then they have the authority to exhume whatever records they like. But if you are going for a job in the bakery, or administration in a bank or business, then it is illegal to go to these lengths, the courts would not allow it. I don't think your laws are much different to ours.

I worked for years on and off for the government........I had a charge of supplying a dangerous and illicit drug as well as a couple of assault charges. since it was my first drug conviction, I got two years probation. This was when I was 21. For 5 years I worked in a pathology lab in a major hospital when I turned 29. They do fairly strict police checks being government and a hospital. I was still employed as they did not have access to such sensitve information but if I applied for ASIO(Aust. Security and Intelligencs Office), different story. you need to get in contact with your federal discrimination board(industrial act) to find out your rights.

And no, you DO NOT need to disclose your mental health condition. In fact in an interview or follow-up, I would not discuss it. If the DUI is mentioned( and I am gob smacked that is even allowed) you can calmly say that it was a serious error in judgement. You have recieved help in the process of understanding the consequences and due to this you have learn't a new skills base - problem solving, understanding action and consequnce in a more enlightened way, resilience, advanced social conscience, codes of conduct and ethical behaviour which you can apply to the workplace. Make your learning from this experience a benefit to their company. It is through my bosses knowledge of my work during mental illness that I was made training supervisor. Make it a plus.

You can do it!!

Good luck.......

Hey,

That sounds a lot like me, except I'm bipolar not bpd. Have you ever been diagnosed bipolar? I take lithium now and it has solved those problems for me, yet I am faced with all the DUI's I had in the past potentially cropping up.
