Hello,
One of my biggest problems is not being able to find comfort when I feel really bad-sometimes I do not have a reason why I feel bad I just do. I really do not have anyone to turn to. If I feel really, really bad, I usually cut myself to feel better. Many of my therapists that I have seen tell me to find a way to comfort myself. I find it really hard to do that. Does anyone else have a hard time knowing how to comfort yourself? Does anyone have any suggestions? Little Princess |

Think of some tiny thing you want and plan how to go get it :-) I once was feeling down, lonely, bored, totally discombobulated :-) and made myself stop and asked Myself, "What do you want" and waited until Myself told me. At that particular moment (I was wandering around the National Zoo in Washington, D.C. by myself) the answer was "an ice cream cone". LOL. I looked around the Zoo, they didn't have any. I looked at a few shops across from the Zoo, none had any. I finally had to go to the grocery store and buy cones and a flavor of ice cream and make myself one! The whole process took a couple hours but was quite entertaining/engrossing and turned out very satisfactorily because my going after what I wanted was rewarding. Even if I hadn't been able to get an ice cream cone right at that moment, I knew what I wanted that sounded "good" to me and would have been able to use that and my willingness to help Me feel better by getting it (eventually) that it would have been comforting right on the spot. I had something to look forward to.
Do you like one subject better than another? Start a project in that subject and when you feel really bad, go to the library or book store or supply store, somewhere where you can find something to help you work more on your subject. Last November I joined NaNoWriMo, the National Novel Writing Month http://www.nanowrimo.org/whatisnano and wrote a 50,000 word novel about "myself". Having to write so much in so short a period of time was hard, fun, rewarding, interesting, distracting :-) but now I have an actual printed paperback I wrote myself! But the best part was what I learned about myself and what I want/wanted, etc. and the pride I have in having done the project is a very good comforter now.
