I have a question about BPD, Since I being under adult mental health team, I now have a CPA and care-co-ordinator my CPN (mental health nurse) that I see fortnightly. Well recently he told me that the psychiatrist and team after much discussion about my history came up with the diagnoses of "emerging personality disorder"
4-5 months on baring in mind it took almost more then a year to reach this diagnoses ive been in & out of hospital after taking numerous overdoses and getting drunk and acting recklessly, Perhaps this is turning out to be BPD after all.. My CPN told me that BPD is not an illness but the condition can make people with it more prone to other mental illnesses like my Depression that ive suffered with. Just wondered if anybody else has been given EPD? coz at the moment I feel like the professional's don't want to label me which is a good thing but maybe puts me in alot of confusion about why I act like a 5 year old..

I've never even heard of "Emerging" personality disorder. o_0
I'm guessing that they've likely told you this because it may be too soon to make a more specific diagnosis(getting diagnosed can often be a process that takes a fair bit of time). A personality disorder is not easy to diagnose either, and with BPD especially it is also something that I know some professionals are very wary about diagnosing because to be quite honest... BPD is a label that has a lot of stigma attached to it even within the psychiatric community(unfortunately), it's not something most people would want to have advertised on their psychiatric records. I would encourage you to talk to your treatment team about this to see if they can help ease some of your confusion. I know it's quite frustrating when it seems like nobody will just tell you what's wrong. Take care of yourself and feel free to keep asking questions... the more you know the better. ![]() |

Are you an adult? And if so are you a very young adult like 18-21? Most BPD is diagnosed in adulthood and they won't diagnose it in childhood. Emerging personality would just mean you may have some traits of BPD but are either too young, or it is too early for them to diagnose it for certain. Emerging personality isn't a DSM diagnosis like BPD but more likely a condition to verify a strong possibility of it in the future. Kind of like pre-diabetic vs a diabetic. That's my understanding of it anyway. I understand it can be very frustrating to feel so bad inside and see so many doctors and hospitals and have them be so vague with what's really going on with you. However, it's a good thing to be thorough and not just slap labels on people because that drastically effects their treatment and life. I wish you the best
