Is it possible to self diagnose ? My therapist and I called it quits after 7 months and as I reflected on our tumultuous theraputic relationship, it dawned on me. I think I have BPD. OMG, I am kind of freaked out, I wish I could talk to her. If its true, did she know... It would explain so much , then why would she have not told me if she suspected? Should I see a Phd this time instead of a LCSW? I am so freakin mad and freaked out... Uggggg I think I hate XT right now!

It's okay...it's not the end of the world. I would find a Phd, and get tested. I wrote about therapists on the post about labels. Try not to be angry at the therapist, many diseases and disorders can 'look' the same. But if you have read the DSM, and you feel it fits, definitely go find a new Tdoc.

I'm not angry , I'm just baffled that this never was considered or at least verbalized to me. It seems so obvious to me... After a little research. So then I wonder if she knew and then saw my recent episode as her out.... Or if she had no idea... Just weird

Umm ... I don't know... I do know some therapist don't like to treat us because were so difficult. Whether or not ur therapist knew or not .. that I don't know. I think you should ask them, and see what they say... I guess the question is .... does it matter what they think? I think an lisw can be just as effective as a phd..

The sad thing is, Lola, that clinicians are "spooked" by the BPD label, even in this day and age that has proven that there are treatments that work for people with BPD. In the past and even in today's world, clinicians don't tell clients that BPD is the suspected diagnosis. It is still considered the "kiss of death". Why? Because most clinicians aren't well trained in the disorder (not their fault, in the past it was believed that BPD was an untreatable personality disorder). I know that BPD wasn't even an indepth topic when I was a mastered student in psychology, AND most psychiatrists aren't schooled well in the topic either, other than to push useless medications . . . BUT most were told that they are in BIG trouble when one of those clients walks through their door.

I think things are improving but it's slow and that's here in the U.S. A lot of clinicians don't want to treat people with BPD and they don't let the client know what their diagnosis is when they refer them out. It's the old shell game. There is treatment out there for us and there are GOOD, SOLID clinicians who are equipped to provide caring and enhancing treatment to us. Your x therapist, however, wasn't equipped to deal with any client who needed services, let alone a client with BPD traits. I'm rooting for you and hoping that you find what you need!

The BPD thing is all my thinking.... But it would make sense. I told my partner and she felt otherwise, thinks I'm grasping at straws. Of course all she heard was "personality disorder" , nice huh? Thanks Jay, won't be lack of trying on my part !
