I live in a city with a population of 265, 404. There is not one DBT group, and I have found only 3 therapist that practice DBT. It's almost like nobody gives a ****. Does anyone else have this problem?

Yep. I'm in a city with 1.3 million people. My insurance doesn't cover any DBT groups, nor any DBT therapists. And a DBT group would cost me $300. That's more than 1/3 of what I get per month! Hence why my CBT therapist sent me here

You can try getting the DBT skills workbook and work on it yourself. I do not start until January so I bought the book and have started reading and doing the assignments.

I think we have the same book, it also has a journal logbook made by the same people. The books are great, no doubt.

I think it just depends on who happens to live in your area. The city/town I live in has less than 15,000 (yes, 15,000) and my T runs a DBT group. I wouldn't have a clue about it, except that he's mentioned it a few times and that he knows that I'd never be caught dead in it.

Just curious, does the insurance cover CBT?

Mine does for individual therapy. But only 8 weeks at a time and adults can usually only see a therapist for 16 weeks per year ![]() There are also free support groups through my county mental health office (Depression, etc.), but no DBT groups.

Yes, it's hard to find dbt classes/groups. I lucked out and found one at the university. I think part of the reason there so difficult to find is it's still a relatively new therapeutic approach. It's only been around since the early 00's and I also suspect a lot of doctors don't want to be that involved with personality disorders.

When I was diagnosed in 2011, I had medicade and was able to do DBT through the county hospital, but had to wait on a waitinglist. Wish I hadn't flunked out with substance abuse issues 8 months in, cuz now I have private PPO insurance and I can't really find anyone.
and I live in a major city in SoCal. Not too far from LA or other major cities and I still have found very few places that will do DBT unless I wanna pay hundreds of thousands of dollars that I don't have. I'll have to go 30 miles from my house to start the program I'm considering, and even with insurance the co-pay is gonna be like $240 a month. So it's everywhere. I believe many therpists think of PD's in a negative light and don't wanna deal with that sort of thing. I hope that changes soon. but if you look online there is do-it-your self self help DBT type of stuff, and meetup groups. |
