Does anyone else have issues with this? I don't know if it's related to BPD impulse issues or not...I've done a bit of online shopping the past few days (2 DVD's, 1 CD, and 2 books), along with using a gift card for clothes. I bought some things for a friends birthday at Target the other day and also bought a skirt. I'm on my way to Target to pick up another skirt I saw...I bought almost an identical one with my gift card, but it won't be here in time for New Years and I want to wear it! I can just like almost feel the impulse in my brain, like I know I shouldn't go shopping, but there's an itch in my brain that if I don't scratch it by at least going to the store and picking up something small, I'll become miserable.

What do other people do to not go overboard? I will use a small basket to carry items so I can't get anything too big.

I do this all the time. I have went to the store with the intent of only buying a couple things and the next thing I know i have spent thousands of dollars on myself. I once on impulse spent $5,000 to see Ozzy in concert. Backstage passes and party with the band. I have a very hard time controlling my impulsive nature. So I know exactly where you're coming from.

This is somewhat common. My EX was a big time shopper. I do believe it is BPD related, but everyone is different.

Guilty! I'm now in debt because of this. The only thing thats stopping me spending me more is I know that I literally don't have the money to be able to afford it.
Thanks for this!

Guilty! I am much better now, knowing how broke we are. I also feel guilty spending my "husband's money" as I am not working. My husband looks at money as our money, it does not matter who earned it. We no longer have credit cards which really cuts down on spending.

Yeah, I have never spent more money than I have, but I would be much better off if I didn't spend it as well...

Your husband sounds like a good partner to have.

He is a pretty good guy.

Right now we are saving up for a trip to Utah in the summer. I have not been since my sister died 22 years ago. I have 4 great nieces/nephews to visit.

I know this is a gigantic problem with many, many BPDs but with the exception of right after I got my first credit card, it's something I don't do. My dad was a gigantic spendthrift and skimper and I'm practically OCD when it comes to spending money.

I've become a bit better at controlling impulse spending, but it still does happen sometimes. Just reading you post made me want to go over to Amazon. I didn't, but wanted to

Have done on a few occasions, but did spend a LOT on those occasions! Not good. Have now got a savings account so it's harder to access money and a proper budget sorted out. Not sure yet whether it makes any difference, will let you know!

Impulsive behavior like spending exsessively is one of the DSM criteria for BPD.
I do not do this personally, in fact I have an obsessive need to plan my finances down to the dollar.
However I have gone overbord in other ways. Substance abuse, verbally attacking someone in defence of a friend, ETC.
I try now that I am sober to really think about the consequences of my actions, but unfortionatly I still mess up once and a while.

I do struggle a lot with impulsive spending. Victoria's Secret online and e-Bay are HUGE temptations & regular over-spending places of mine. Ugh... I hate myself for it ~ but I'm also not real tempted to try & give it up either. I'm not sure what that means. Maybe it's that I'm (so far) keeping it relatively in check???
