WHY do some call BPD people abusive, dangerous, psychopaths? Seen it a lot on out of the fog forum, also there are even people out there claiming to be therapists who have written books about us! (e.g. Sandra L. Brown) I never abused anyone! In fact, I was the one who had to flee to a battered women's shelter

It really upsets me! And I am tired of all the stigma. Also, I never tell anyone but my mental health providers this diagnosis, otherwise I would never get any care for physical problems!

Because the world is full of judgemental idiots. The internet gives judgemental idiots the cloak of anonymity, meaning they don't fear consequences for being judgemental idiots.

I never tell anyone else either, but I don't see the need for it. But I think my PCP might know the diagnosis anyway because it's probably in my medical record now. He hasn't mentioned it though.

Yasmine,
As the first responder said so well, it's easy to find judgmental idiots who stigmatize BPD. But, there are many good people out there who compassionately understand borderlines and support their recovery. Try not to dwell on the bad people, and instead direct your energy toward finding messages of hope, support and acceptance toward BPD. There are many people out there who will give that message to you regarding BPD.
Thanks for this!

I see the terms, sociopath and psychopath thrown around loosely a lot specially on youtube even by so-called "experts". I think part of the reason for that is personality disorders of the cluster 3 type, BPD, NPD, and ASPD are often considered dangerous or violent and therefore the tags are placed on them. I suppose it all depends on what your definition if sociopath and psychopath is. While it's certainly possible for NPD and BPD to be such, it's not nearly seen in BPD.

That's what I was worried about, my husband believing I'm a terrible person and leaving me. He knows me though and your boyfriend knows you. Maybe speak to him about your concerns.

I worry a lot about the stigma though. I have only told my husband and dad about the diagnosis. I think that you get abusive people in all walks of life whether or not they have a mental health problem. Its about the individual and not the label, just wish more people thought that way.

I think (and I think this about my son who has autism as well) that people are labeled as having this or that and the fact that we each have our own upbringing and personality mixed in with it are not taken into consideration. Just because I have borderline doesn't mean I am EXACTLY like others who have it because I have a unique personality all my own. This is just more stereotype bull and the world is full of it.
