As a child we moved around alot. I would only have made friends in one school when it was time to move again. The latter part of my education was fairly settled and the moving ended. As an adult, I found it very difficult to stay in one place and was constantly moving both homes and jobs. I could never commit to staying anywhere for any significant amount of time. (The longest I stayed in a job was 4years, which I suppose was long enough!) I often wondered if, having moved alot as a child had anything to do with my not being able to settle anywhere as an adult? While I know that I have a very impulsive side, I wonder if anyone else has had this experience? I would be grateful for any thoughts even if you do not relate. Thank You.

Hello. I can relate. We moved a lot bit within the same city. I crave change now. Also the longest I was in a job was 4 years. I don't know the reason behind this but it's very annoying. Just wanted to let you know that you're not alone. Also I make very impulsive decisions if it involves change.
Thanks for this!

It sounds like it may come more from your impulsiveness more than you moving around as a child. But it could be some of both.

I on the other hand never moved as a child and had moving as an adult, but my personality doesn't like change, which is why I really think my personality has more to do with it, because it affects every other part of my life.

So I'm just the opposite side of the coin unless I'm manic then all bets are off.

We moved around a lot when I was a child as well, but I have somewhat of an opposite feeling. I really craved a sense of stability growing up and also do as an adult. I want to establish myself in a career as well as with a friend group. On the other hand, I do sometimes feel like I get stagnant. It's a big world out there, and there is a lot to explore. When I was in my 20's I got very restless very easily and was impulsive. I don't really feel that way anymore.

The degree I will soon earn will open up opportunities and I sort of want to see what's out there, maybe take a job in another city, live there for a while before moving on to grad school. But I don't feel that this is impulsive--I think that it's adventurous. I think there's a difference.

I grew up in the same big, old house when I was a kid. My family was very entrenched in my hometown. Made my parents send me to boarding school, though, and once I hit college, I have never stopped running around. I'm beginning to understand that my behavior was symptomatic of BPD.

Thanks folks, Yes, I'm beginning to think that my need to keep moving has more to do with Bpd than what happened as a child. Thanks for the replies.

I forgot to add that my mother had BPD...which may explain why we moved around, and often packed up and hit the road with only a few weeks to months notice.

We were a military family and moved at least every three years. Home life was not stable. I wonder if I would be so scared of people if we hadn't moved so much or if my family had been more stable. Both probably contributed.
