During one of our last meetings my last therapist said that I have "borderline traits", except I hate her so I'm not going back. My boyfriend (psych major so he's annoying) has expressed concerns about this too. Ik online tests don't mean anything but I've consistently scored high in the "borderline" area on those. It's annoying but I want to put this to bed. Where do I go that I can get evaluated? An actual psychiatrist? A hospital? A plain old therapist? I really hate these people but I'm supposed to be getting help anyway.

Also will they have me admitted if I mention sh and suicide? I should be open but I have **** to do. and I don't want anyone to know about this people hate me as it is

Hello Yukari: I'm sorry I'm not really able to comment authoritatively with regard to your concern. But I noticed no one had replied to your post. So I thought I would. (By the way, I don't have a lot of use for most mental health professionals either. My experiences with them have mostly been negative.)

My personal opinion, for what it's worth, is that the best place for you to start is with a therapist. (Of course I don't know where you live & that makes a difference.) But, at least based on my own experience, all most psychiatrists do is prescribe & monitor psych med's. It can take a few tries to find a therapist you feel comfortable with. So you may have to try a few out... sort-of like test-driving cars I guess. I've never personally had any success finding a T I felt good about. However, I've read posts, here on PC, written by members who said their therapists saved their lives! So I presume there are great therapists out there. It's just a matter of finding them.

As far as self-harm & suicidal thoughts go... here again I don't know how much guidance I can offer. In general, I don't believe people are hospitalized for self-harm. As far as suicidal thought goes, it really depends on the situation. If you're simply having the thoughts but have no intention of acting on them & have no plan, I don't think you would be likely to be in danger of being hospitalized. On the other hand, if the mental health professional you see gets the impression you may be a danger to yourself, then yes I would presume hospitalization might be a possibility. At least these are my thoughts based on my own personal experiences over the years. I wish you well...

I've gotten mixed messages on the sh hospitalization thing, one of my therapists was way too eager to ship me off if I mentioned even thinking about it. With another one I openly mentioned own often I did it and she didn't mention hospitalization. These were in two different states so it might've been a legal thing but I'm not sure.

Thanks for replying

Usually unless you're a threat to yourself or others, you won't be hospitalized.

You would need to see a psychiatrist to get a solid diagnosis (though some therapists would also diagnose as well).

That's what I thought, I think the "threat to myself" is the part that feels subjective to me. I always try to ask about their confidentiality policy just in case.

I'll start looking into decent psychiatrists and therapists around here. it'll depend on which one's closer and will take my insurance I guess. Thank you for replying

Confidentiality can be violated when the therapist believes that there is an imminent threat to your safety or that of others.
