Hi
My new psychiatrist thinks I should try low doses of an antipsychotic medication, to calm down, especially at night, or when I have a breakdown. I am quite worried about the side effects of these meds, particularly weight gain, since I have a history of an eating disorder. Anyone has experience with these type of meds for BPD? Are there better alternatives with less side effects? Thanks |

I'm on a low dose of one of those meds , I'm not going to attempt to spell since I just woke up. The one I'm on does not cause weight gain. Its called Aripiprazole .

I'm also on aripiprazole and it helped me to dial down the intensity of my emotions (along with daily meditation). It doesn't usually cause weight gain at low doses (I'm on ten mg a day) but even if you don't gain weight it can lead to diabetes so I had my GP prescribe a glucose monitor and treat my blood sugar regularly. So far, so good!

I'm on both risperidone and seroquel. I was prescribed the risperidone first, years ago, to deal with dissociation and just as my pdoc put it "holding my brain together." I was on a very low dose. .5 mg a day and it really helped. I later discovered it was a good augmentation for my anti-d so increased the amount I'm on, and am now taking 5 mg a day. No weight gain.
The seroquel was prescribed for anxiety, and is also very sedating, so if you're looking for something at night to help you sleep that might be a better option. It's been weight neutral for me, but only because I'm really strict about what I eat - it definitely caused increased sugar cravings for me. Hope you find something that helps. splitimage |

I'm on 100mg of Seroquel which is considered a low dose. It really helps me remain calm and I sleep well at night (I take it at night)
I did gain a little weight at first but the gain tapered off and I've been at the same weight for several years now. I don't really watch my diet or exercise much either. If I was more vigilant about this I would probably lose weight.

Zyprexa caused me to gain weight, and gave me restlessness and pacing. Seroquel helped me sleep, but I wasn't on it very long. My psychiatrist gave me XR which is very expensive even with insurance. I was on risperidone in the hospital and had weird symptoms but I can't say for sure if that was the medicine or not. I was having a lot of weird experiences in the hospital.
I've been interested in trying mood stabilizers. I'm wondering if anyone here has had experience with them? |

Take this with a grain of salt because I seem to be very sensitive to meds but I have been on two anti psychotics (at separate times)and both of them gave me horrible akathisia which amplified my anxiety for even months to come after stopping the med. Nightmarish experience.
I was on .05 mg of Saphris and 20 mg of Latuda. If you go on anti psychotics be on the lookout for a very bizarre, unworldly feeling of dread which may also be accompanied by restlessness. |
