Has anyone lost their periods at a normal/ low end normal weight?

I swing between anorexia and bulimia and have lost my period when really underweight but that is not the case now. In fact, I have been gaining weight but purging a lot and now no period. ( not pregnant, either ). I am usually so regular - even when heavily into b/p. I don't know if this is eating disorder related or something else.

Hi precious,
In my teens, when I was experiencing the same problems as you, and was a average weight, my periods stopped for 3 years. I think it is just our bodies way of saying it cant cope with what we are doing so it hibernates to protect itself. If you are worried, go and see your doctor. My periods came back when I was about 18, and are still regular to this day, and I am 47 now! I have had every eating disorder under the sun, I think, but my body is strong, and I try to eat healthily whenever I can, although not doing that brilliantly at the moment. Good luck.

The body will not allow you to have a period when you have less that "X" % of body fat. You should speak to your physician about this so that you will know what other problems you may be at risk for- vitamin deficiency, osteporosis, tears in the esophagus, anemia to mention a few.
Good luck to you.

I have no experience with this, but I think it's not necessarily being underweight htat causes yout o los eyour period, but being malnourished. Also for how long have you been without a period? If it's one missed period, this could be stress or anything. If i's three or more, see your doctor.

Thanks for the responses. I think it's probably my body telling me to slow down. Don't need to goto the doctor over this if its just an eating disorder thing. Other than telling me to change my behaviors, there is nothing they can do medically for that.
Thanks for this!

I have bulimia and have had major problems with my periods. Once again I have lost my period all together and I was told it was because of the bulimia and the stress it puts on my body. I would suggest going to see the doctor but they will probably tell you to seek help for you eating disorder and if you are not in a place to do that right now then I'm not sure what else to advice. Possibly start taking vitamins if you don't already?
