Last Sunday, I tripped going down the stairs to the basement. I didn't hip any steps on the way down, and landed on concrete directly on my right hip. The fall was approximately four feet. The pain was so bad I could even call for help. Luckily the people I live with heard the crash and found me. It took several minutes for me to be able to move and they had to help me get up.

There is no swelling or bruising, but intense, sharp aching in my right groin.
Apparently, the groin is a common place for pain from a fractured hip. I can put some weight on it, but its getting worse instead of better. Occasionally, when I move it, I get a bolt of pain bad enough to make me yelp.

I wondered if anyone has had a hip fracture, and if so, was their bruising and swelling? I don't want to go to the Dr. as I have a $500 deductable on my insurance and can't afford it. It seems that every time something happens, my health insurance ups my premiums. Right now its $629 a month out of pocket.

Anyway, if anyone has any experience with hip fractures I'd appreciate the advice.

If you continue to be unable to bear wt., or it continues to get worse; you really do need to go to urgent care or the ER, if you do have a fracture and it doesn't heal properly, you will always have problems with the hip/leg... (otherwise, ice, rest, no wt. bearing then a little at a time...immediate ER if you have any difficulty breathing, chest pain or continued severe groin pain...)...gentle movement/range of motion/
Just pay the bill a few bucks a month, as long as you are paying something...

I agree with winter4me. I have no experience with a hip fracture but I have had 3 hip replacements and 1 dislocated a month out of surgery. If you do have a fracture and it does not heal the way it should you will start to get arthritis in that joint as you age. With what winter4me said with your range of motion...if you do start to lose range of motion it will be permeate. After they replace a hip joint if they can get you up walking that same day after surgery they will and that is 100% for not losing range of motion. Also know that your hips are the largest most load bearing joint in your body. So ask your self, whats more important...saving money by not going to get it checked out or paying money to make sure you are healthy. You really cant put a price tag on your health....

A fall like you describe is not something to ignore. When dealing with large bone areas you can risk danger of blood clots and permanent damage. It is better to face a big hospital bill than risk your life. Go Now!

This is going to sound odd. Does one leg look shorter than the other or is one leg rotating outwards? You need to get this checked out!
