How many people see pain management? If so what are you prescribed? What alternative therapies have you tried?

Hi I do I am on transtec patches for slow release oramorph for immediate relief also zomorph. However I'm still having pain at the moment.
Ive tried most aramotherapy, specialist bath salts and oils, acupuncture I couldn't do due to epilepsy, massage, supplements etc. I see your already taking a lot of meds too like me. May I ask what you have pain due to is it fibro? Would like to find a herbal treatment that would work for me rather than meds but tried most with little result. Ps I was on butrans at first for pain. J |

You poor thing, being so young and having to tolerate so much pain and the issues that come with it. I have Oxycontin & Oxynorm for my pain and I'm hoping to wean off to something milder as I also hate all my meds. Have they checked out your pelvic pain to see what's causing it? or do you think its related to the Fibro? I wish you well, and a pain free future. x

I have ben doing pain management for about 15 years now and its not helping me a whole lot anymore. I am currently on 125mcg of fentanyl patches that I change every 3 days and I take immediate release morphine sulfate 30 mg tablets every 8 hours, soma 350mg three times a day, neurontin 300mg twice a day and 800mg at night. I used to also take NSAIDs but because of my stomach surgery I can't take them anymore. I also take Xanax 0.5mg 1-2 tabs up to 3 times a day and lamicitial 200mg ODT daily. Now before I started taking all these pain ,I tried all the of the doctors other suggestions. I have done aquatic physical therapy until my joints kept swelling and the doctors made me stop. I also did interventional radiology , epidurals (also until told to stop), selective nerve root injections, and trigger point injections. I did all those until they stopped being effective.
I have been diagnosed with fibromyalgia, occipital neuralgia, degenerative disc disease, spinal stenosis, chronic regional pain syndrome, nerve damage, fractured L5, L3 crushed, L2, L4 herniated, I have had 3 knee surgeries so far and need to have both knees replaced, need hip replacement, need 2 level discetomy with fusion on the lumbar spine, and since we are naming disorders bipolar type 1. I have not had a pain free day since 2000 and I no longer remember what no pain feels like and I probably will never experience that again on this earth. I am waiting till kids get a bit older and more independent before I start having the surgeries and I am going to completely wear my original parts out till I can't walk any longer. I have also lost 120 pounds and that has helped quite a bit with the pain and I am going to continue to do so maybe about another 50 pounds or so and my spinal neurosurgeon said it was a good idea to wait until I have lost all the wait before having the back surgeries. I am only 40 but feel like I am 40 years old and feel like I have the body of an 80 year old. My main goal is to eventually be in good enough shape to get job. Not sure how realistic of a goal that working is but I am still going to pray for it. |

I also am bipolar. Seems like you've been through alot and you have more problems that would warrant stronger pain management then me...Although my pain is bad at times..There are sometimes where I am only a 1-2 on the pain scale. I know deep down that being on narcotics isnt the answer but I wish someone would give me a shot at being on them so I can at least see how it will affect me. The dr's think because I can work that I'm ok. I work at a desk..I sit all day...Right now my pain is really bad and I dont have any pain meds other than my patch...I have to suck it up...I have thought about going and seeing every pain management dr in my area until I get one who will take me seriously but I dont want to be labeled a drug seeker..Only time will tell.

I am sorry to hear the pain you have to deal with. I am in my early 30's and PAIN IS PAIN! Sorry this is disturbing since I just went threw a similar case. If you look at my thread:How Do You Rate Pain?
That MD does not have to live in your body. If I were you I would try a few new MDs if you want to take medication for pain management. Do you have any specialty MDs for your diagnosis? I would ask them as well. If you start on a new MD they will start low like Tylenol 3 which you would have to go back monthly to get new prescriptions from MD which than you could work your way up if needed. Just out of curiosity is this a male or female MD? Google community acupuncture in your city and try acupuncture for $10-$30 pay what you can basically. |

I was 24 and in severe chronic pain! You need to find a doctor that will take your pain seriously. Being 24 years old is NOT a reason to not treat pain with opiates if necessary. People can have chronic pain, or any other type of pain AT ANY AGE.

Hi Ginaa,
I agree with Shinty. Your age shouldn't determine the intensity of pain you can have. I was 23 and was suffering from fibromyalgia which was the cause for the pain and also had joint stiffness, nerve pain, palpitations and was always tired. But fortunately enough I came in contact with the best orthopedic surgeons on long island and they understood my pain. They weren't like the other docs I had met who brushed me off saying you are too young to have pain management. The orthopedics in long island provided me with the best pain management sessions and my pain has reduced almost miraculously. I don't crib in pain all the time now! |

Gina, I saw a really good pain specialist about 15 years ago. She encouraged me to try acupuncture and massage after I told her I really didn't want to take narcotics if I could avoid it. She was a professor at a medical school and was very smart as well as being open to alternative medicine.
I lived in a large city at the time and was able to go to a school of acupuncture for treatments. They were much less expensive. About a year after that, I was diagnosed with a form of autoimmune arthritis. I had it for about 5 year before it was diagnosed. I kept being told all my pain was coming from fibromyalgia. Not that fibro can't hurt an awful lot, but it took an entirely different kind of immune suppressant med to treat the arthritis. Now I take the med for the arthritis and I take Cymbalta for the fibromyalgia. I confess to limiting my activities pretty severely now. I avoid most things that trigger severe joint pain and swelling. I gave up gardening. I have a friend with interstitial cystitis. She follows a diet for it and she says it helps a lot. It is extremely restrictive, though. I wish you luck in finding your answers. New things are constantly being invented. If you'd told me 15 years ago that I'd have only moderate pain now, I don't think I would have believed it. |
