Interesting article right here at PC about how chronic pain affects the brain. Seems that yoga might counteract the changes in the brain.

Yoga, Chronic Pain Have Opposite Effects on Gray Matter | Psych Central News

Quote:
Chronic pain is known to cause brain anatomy abnormalities, but yoga can be a successful tool in the prevention or even the reversing of these effects on the brain, according to a National Institutes of Health (NIH) official speaking at the American Pain Society’s annual meeting.
...
Brain anatomy changes may contribute to mood disorders and other affective and cognitive comorbidities of chronic pain. The encouraging news for people with chronic pain is mind-body practices seem to exert a protective effect on brain gray matter that counteracts the neuroanatomical effects of chronic pain,” Bushnell added.

Good article. Maybe it will motivate me to try to find a yoga class that I can afford. It has been *koff* 16 years since I've practiced yoga regularly, and besides the cost, I also dread the first few weeks while the body adjusts.

When I was practicing regularly, I would get some pain relief but also a general good effect on my health. When you're doing those inverted postures, it just feels like something healthy is going on in your body.

My favorite yoga pose is Savasana (corpse pose.)
Thanks for this!

I found Yoga VERY therapeutic- but living on SSDI I can not afford it... same with acupuncture - worked WONDERS, but my medical insurance will not pay for it.... I am fortunate to make it through the month with all my bills..... it seems there is no way to win or even try to balance the pain in my body and mind.....
