There is a new advertisement on the site, that suddenly pops up in the middle of the screen after the page has already loaded. It is asking you to fill out a survey, and you HAVE to click the ad to make it go away.

I find the ad somewhat annoying, but it is also a little scary to be in the middle of reading about a sensitive topic and this ad suddenly takes over the screen. I can imagine for someone in a less secure place, that this might be triggering.

Not only does the ad come up unexpectedly, but it is asking for personal information -- not good for those of us who use PC as a safe place.

I am not sure who is in charge of this, but I wanted to bring the issue to light. I understand the need for advertising revenue, but perhaps the predictable banner ad could make a comeback.

Humbly,
SpottedOwl

It's not an ad. It's a marketing survey our marketing folks ask us to run to gain more information about our audience. It has nothing to do with what you're reading, nor is it an advertisement.

For better or worse, advertisements support the running of this site, and this kind of survey helps advertisers understand who our audience is.

If you are a logged-in member, you see no advertisements at all after your first login for the day.

Once I started on that survey, but was advised that my initial answers made me not qualified to continue the survey. That is OK, but it keeps popping up! Isn't there some way to make it go away if you don't fit what the survey wants?

I think I had to fill one of those out before, but it wouldn't let me answer past the 3rd question or so because of my age.

Yes the best way to get rid of a survey is to say you are very old--they do not want feedback from the very old

My point it that it keeps popping up, even though it did not want me when I started to answer...

That cussed survey keeps popping up, sometimes more than once during a session. It already disqualified me because I am too old, but it keeps coming back. Is there no way to make it go away permanently?

Have you checked your popup menu. It could be from that.

What do you mean by a popup menu?

I'm not quite sure what jerrymichele meant but in my browser (Firefox 2) there are controls for how it should handle popup windows: allow them, block them completely, or allow them only for specified sites. I use the block-all setting except when I go to one of a handful of sites where popups are a necessary part of navigation.

I tried the "Show New Private Message Notification Pop-up" option briefly (it required enabling popups) but found I preferred the less obtrusive announcement up in the "Welcome" corner.

I never saw the survey popup you mentioned, probably because I haven't had popups enabled for a while.

In the browser I normally use, Camino for the Macintosh, under Preferences there is an option to Block Popup Windows, but although it works most times it seems completely ineffective at stopping that irritating survey.

What about staying logged in? I only sign in once a day, and click on the "remember me" box when I do, so that every time I come on the forum, i'm automatically logged in. Since I've done this, I haven't gotten the survey. Don't know if this will help much, but I hope it's resolved soon

I use Firefox and have never seen these ads. I use the NoScript and Adblock Plus add-ons, which work wonderfully well.
