Sometimes I have an issue and sometimes I don't, it really depends on the speed and angle ---strange as that seems --- that I approach the box. Eventually it works.

I'm also having this issue. I'm running vista and IE7. Only way I've found around it is right click near where you need to click and then left click it but to be honest that's sort of a pain

dear DocJohn,

can you please explain how to use the "Blue Menu" function? i thought i could figure it out but i can't. wasn't that the "old" version of the drop down menu's? am not sure i understand that.

also, i forgot to mention that i have a program called ATF-Cleaner.exe and use it once a week or so to clean up everything, cache, recycle bin, temps, cookies, history etc. and still having trouble.

thank you!

I just tried Googling on "atf cleaner" and got this group of related hits:

I have no idea which of those, if any, are relevant to your situation but if it was my system I'd want to make sure that ATF Cleaner wasn't part of the problem somehow.

oh dear, i'm glad you checked that out. but i have Windows 7 and has worked fine for me...no problems. actually, when hewlett packard "took over" my laptop from their end to do what i don't remember now, they installed it for me. these are what it targets to clean: windows temp, current user temp, all users temp, cookies, temporary internet files, history, prefetch, java cache, recycle bin.

another source online says it varies with the system you have...vista, 2000 etc. i'm not computer savy enough to understand it all but yes, it has worked fine for me. but in light of what you found, i sure won't be updating it! my desktop icons are just fine where they are! lol

there's also a program under System Tools called "disc cleaner". don't really know what that does, just know it's there and too scared to try it!

thanks for posting this, don't want anyone to try something that may cause damage.

Thanks for this!

The problem of the chat dropdown not working for me just surfaced today. I do not often look at who is in chat. So it might have been not working correctly for a bit of time prior.

After reading everyones posts, I came up with something that seems to work much of the time for me. I left click on the bottom edge of the chat bar eg where it might say (3) Then I keep the left click down as if I am dragging. But it doesnt seem to work for me unless I click on the bottom edge of the bar. And then keep the left click depressed, until I get to the area I want. Then I release the left click.

BTW I use my pc disc cleaner( found under system tools, and also something called CCleaner to clear everything. There is also a fairly easy way to manually clear cashe. But its slightly different instructions depending on the browser you are using.
Thanks for this!

basically i just gave up trying to come up with a workable solution. so i just keep pointing the cursor on the darn things until the menus stops disappearing and i can then scroll down to what i need to click on.

and the long way around? click on your screen name (above right where it says "Welcome ..."), then click on "my profile" upper left, then to the left scroll down and choose "send a PM", or go to the persons profile page (u have to find their name to click on tho), click on "contact info" near the bottom, then click on send a PM. what a hassle but oh well, patience, perseverence!!!

DocJohn, there's gotta be a better way!!!

I happened to be on my "spare" computer (Windows XP, Firefox 3.6.12) and thought I'd see how those menus worked for me from here. Just like on my other computer: no problems.

If I get around to it, I'll also try them with IE and Chrome and report back.

-------------------
Update: The menus worked fine with IE 8 before I was logged in but now they're playing the same trick that other users have described. I'll put my mouse pointer on Forums, for example. A dropdown will appear with six options (Index, Calendar, Add Event, ...). I'll start to move my mouse cursor onto the dropdown, but as soon as it leaves the Forums button the dropdown will disappear. The same thing was happening with the other buttons I tried (Blogs and Chat).

Chrome is still downloading with probably two hours to go, so that part of the test will have to wait a bit.

--------------------------
Oh, hey! I just tried Gus's scroll wheel trick and it worked for me! When I hover the mouse pointer over the Forums button, the dropdown appears. If, instead of rolling my mouse, I turn the scroll wheel, the whole page scrolls up and the dropdown stays open as it comes under the mouse pointer. Once I'm there, I can roll the mouse from option to option and the dropdown will stay in place.

Gotta be careful with this darn Internet Explorer, though -- while I was innocently moving my mouse pointer over the options, this page disappeared and the Forums Index came up instead. Then, when I backed up to this page, my latest editing changes to this post weren't there any more. Firefox doesn't do that to me.

--------------------------
Here I am in Google Chrome 8.0.552.215, freshly downloaded and installed. This time those dropdown menus work normally whether I'm logged in or not.

In summary: the only way I've encountered the problem has been with Internet Explorer (8) and while logged in.

With the detailed information Fool Zero was able to provide, this issue should be fixed for IE 8 users next time they log in after closing their web browser completely.
