The easiest thing to do is to run a malware detector program on your computer to rule out the possibility -- first -- that it just isn't your computer.

MacScan offers a 30-day free trial of their software (which is legitimate) here:

http://macscan.securemac.com/

Windows offers a free virus/malware scanner here:

http://www.microsoft.com/security/sc...s/default.aspx

There are, of course, dozens of others available for Windows.

Regardless of what other people's experiences are, you should also contact Psychology Today to inform them of what you're experiencing. The fact that it's only happening on their site may suggest something is going on with their site or an ad they are running through their ad network. Here's their contact page:

https://my.psychologytoday.com/feedback

Although I don't know if this email address will work, you can also try emailing them at:

aaron@psychologytoday.com

Best,
DocJohn

I did contact them at least twice. So far no response, but they may not respond to such contacts.

So far today, no instances of trouble on their Web site.

I ran MacScan -- the demo version. It took over four hours to scan every file on my hard drive. It found some tracer cookies, but nothing more. I had it kill those, but they may reestablish themselves in the future.

No more events on Psychology Today since day-before-yesterday.

Some years ago my scans (with Spybot Search & Destroy) were turning up and removing the same tracking cookies week after week. I took to noting the sites and adding them to the accept-no-cookies list on my browser. I ended up with 24 domain names listed but I rarely get any new detections any more.

Websites that don't run daily virus/malware scans are vulnerable to attack.

A few weeks ago, I discovered one of the American Psychological Association's websites had been compromised to download a virus whenever you visited any of their pages. After 24 hours, the site was still online, giving viruses to the hundreds of people who had visited. Only after I complained the second time did they take it down to fix the problem.

The lesson? Without being on 24/7 alert and taking the necessary precautions, any website can be vulnerable to attack. We work hard to keep everything updated here so our users don't get exposed to that sort of thing, but it doesn't mean it can't happen.

I was under the impression that RIPE just maintained the catalog where you'd look up domain names and their owners in certain parts of the world. The particular address you gave seems to be in Germany.

I don't know what RIPE is, or its relation to the addresses. For that address it had both German and USSR (su) domains listed. I haven't taken the trouble to figure out what all the information means that one can get from the DomainTools site.

Your experience, Pachyderm, may indicate malice, though the foreign IPs may have to do with multiple hosting sites, as many major sites do as a way of assuring continuous service.
