I'm sure improvements will be made eventually but I wouldn't hold my breath for "soon".

When DocJohn primarily accesses the site on his mobile, I'll know it is time to go all mobile

I'm thinking of getting a tablet in November, coordinating a new, "vanilla" phone (remind me when my 2-yr. contract expires in November that choosing a phone because you have "heard of" (Blackberry) the name is not a good decision), ten inch tablet, and Skype phone number and not even using my laptop anymore :-) Never mind that I can't type well on the touch screen and will have to buy an add-on keyboard for the tablet since I type way more than I text. Ah, the exigencies of evolving technologies.
It's not really a programming issue at all. If a mobile device supports viewing full sites that are non mobile, then it's just a matter of making it so that the mobile device does not switch to mobile version. I'm not sure if this would be soemthing that the site can add an option for or if it's a setting on the mobile device to not use the mobile version for web browsing. Maybe both are possibilities, but even if the PC site added an option to disable opening in mobile version, it's not a huge programming issue, simply put it reads the browser useragent version and detects what browser it is. I'm guessing PC reads a useragent version that shows it is mobile and it serves up the site appropriately. The option just needs to exist to turn this detection off at the user's discretion.

We've turned off mobile device detection temporarily, to see if that setting makes people happier. There are also two new shortcuts that should set your stylesheet if you'd like to change it:

To set it back to the normal default:

http://forums.psychcentral.com/stylepc

To set it to the mobile stylesheet:

http://forums.psychcentral.com/stylemobile

Let me know if any of this works better or worse for you....

OH NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I can't access PC with the full site on my mobile. It is tiny and doesn't work at all. Please please please consider changing back to mobile. My membership is going to be seriously compromised as I will hardly ever be able to come on here. I know you can't make everyone happy but please, what am I going to do without PC on my phone? OH NO!!!!!!!!!!!!

Since we assume most people will access the site through one platform or another, it shouldn't be that difficult to hit (and bookmark) the stylesheet changing links I posted above and simply go to that as the default link (instead of whatever your bookmark is today for the forums).

So on your PC, choose the stylepc link and make that your default bookmark.

On your phone, choose the stylemobile link, and make that your default bookmark.

I did exactly that and changed it on my phone but it changed it on my computer as well. So I changed it on my computer to stylepc and it changed it back on my phone. Now all my settings are lost and all the forums I had hidden from view are showing. It looks like I am going to have to change it each and every time I want to use PC on my phone. Most inconvenient and frustrating.

By the way, is it possible to make this thread a sticky? Or at least the links to change back and forth.

the link helped me get back to the mobile version, thanks. also, fyi, have you been testing this "live" for the last couple of weeks? cuz I have not been able to make a purchase on amazon for about that long, which was fine, I saved some money, but I almost bought a new phone I was getting so frustrated. it may have also messed up my access to nytimes.com on the weekends. but then yesterday, all of a sudden, everything was (relatively) cool. so, just so you know, everything was NOT "transparent to the user", as we used to like to say!

thanks again,
h

Sabrina... do you have synced bookmarks or something between your phone and PC? Sorry, we don't have a simple answer for that right now.

Trippin, not sure why it wouldn't save your changes. Did you try clicking on the links earlier in this thread or did you do it through your profile page (Edit Options)?

Thanks for sticking with me DocJohn. I cannot answer why my phone and PC are synced. Doesn't make sense to me. I guess I am just going to have to work around it for now. Not ideal but all I can do (unless mobile option is switched back on)

Just some feedback. I have somehow managed to get mobile back on my phone and full site on my computer (don't ask me how, but I got it to work). The only change is that I have all the forums now and I am unable to hide any. But that is a small sacrifice for being able to use my phone again.

I am not sure if this will help anyone or not, but if you ha e an android phone there should be a "menu" button right next to the URL. When you scroll down and the URL bar pops up, so does the menu button. If you click that there is an option to enable websites in full mode or in mobile. I change mine all the time depending on the site. Nearly all smart phoned have this option, but I am most familiar with the android. If you need help with a different phone you should be able to google it, I can be of some assistance if need be.

Again, not sure if this will help anyone or if it is what anyone is wanting, but it will only change the setting on your phone not on your PC as well. I noticed a lot of people having trouble with going through the site to change it, and then it not working on their PC correctly.

are these dead links two days later? I can't get mobile to work at all on my phone. this now brings up the control panel. 15 minutes is waaaay too long for me to read and respond to one post, esp with only one eye.

so, just to make it clear, is the mobile option available to mobile users? if so, how and where? thanks.

mobile option still not available in mobile. I confess, I accidentally hit "full option" while replying to a post 2 days ago, now I can't get back to mobile, ever, apparently. I will check back occasionally, otherwise I guess I have to find a new bad habit. I can't spend all my time waiting for a computer to respond, do you think i'm nuts?? wait a minute, don't answEr that!

hankster, I just tried it on a PC, and both links work for me. They both direct you to the control panel, but they should change the stylesheet at the same time. Try again?

Just tried it again on my phone, and it's fine. Are you sure you're clicking the right link? Maybe your phone is messing up the link and typing it in instead would work? You are clicking stylemobile, right?

It could have something to do with the browser cache, but I don't think so....

Hankster, according to your user profile available to admin, you should be on "mobile" stylesheet right now. If you're not, it's something weird with your web browser/computer setup, because that's what your account is set for with us ("mobile").
