I get annoyed when a new member pops up with an avatar identical to that of an existing member. It is confusing to me. Cannot you enforce uniqueness, just as you do with usernames?

Thanks

I understand your frustration, but I believe that all the avatars go into an "avatar catagory" which is available to all members. I hope that DocJohn reads this thread and can comment further on it, but I don't believe (I could be wrong) there is a way of defining an avatar to only one member at this time.

I'm sorry

I hardly see avatars these days. I have the same one I found online as the day I joined and have no intention of changing mine, as it represents me so well... But now you have me hoping im not sharing it with someone else... I do hope it is or will be possible to make them unique to the user.

Not everyone has the time, interest, know-how to make/upload their own avatar so there's a group of some to choose from and with so many thousand members some of those are going to be used multiple times (the more popular ones). Make sure if you upload your own avatar that you have the rights to it, that it is "yours" to use.

Isn't there an option to not see other peoples avatars/signatures?
Thanks for this!

Yes, there is, under Your Control Panel > Edit Options:
Visible Post Elements
You have the option to show or hide various elements of messages, which may be of use to users on slow internet connections, or who want to remove extraneous clutter from posts.
[ ] Show Signatures
[x] Show Avatars
[x] Show Images (including attached images and images in [IMG] code)

I don't see the problem if two people have the same avatar, as it shows they both have similar interests. Usernames have to be unique because it's how you log on and are identified by the PC database but avatars aren't. If it really bothers you, why not PM the person, tell them why it irritates you and ask if they can change theirs or you change yours.

That is not a problem, no one is using my avatar. But I have seen several (!) penguins, for instance.

Yup, that's just the way it is, sorry. We have no way of enforcing unique images for each member.

Best,
DocJohn

I can understand your frustration.

I believe there is a way to upload your own from your computer as a selection. I uploaded my own personal avatar from my computer, so that no one could duplicate it and it makes it special for just me.

Maybe it can be encouraged to try and upload your own even though there are still some that are available as "generic" ones.

I hope your day is well!
