Hey folks. I've noticed that another vBulletin forum has a button at the top of the mobile page that allows you to view the desktop website instead of the mobile one. Since there are many features that are only available on the full site (hugs and thanks and visitor messages, to start), I think this would be a good feature to add.

I agree! I was just about to post about this. I hate the mobile version and I can't turn it off.

The complexity of programming a mobile, full-board option well for iPhone/Pad and Android (at a minimum) (the site is gigantic, not just the vBulletin shell for these forums and is proprietary software making it all work together "seamlessly") is great and this is a non-profit site with little or no monies coming from its members and visitors and has a very small staff, many of them, volunteers. I'm sure improvements will be made eventually but I wouldn't hold my breath for "soon".

When DocJohn primarily accesses the site on his mobile, I'll know it is time to go all mobile

I'm thinking of getting a tablet in November, coordinating a new, "vanilla" phone (remind me when my 2-yr. contract expires in November that choosing a phone because you have "heard of" (Blackberry) the name is not a good decision), ten inch tablet, and Skype phone number and not even using my laptop anymore :-) Never mind that I can't type well on the touch screen and will have to buy an add-on keyboard for the tablet since I type way more than I text. Ah, the exigencies of evolving technologies.

Isn't it possible to "fool" the site into thinking you have a desktop and not displaying the mobile site? I don't mind if it's not optimized for a phone and you have to scroll everywhere: I know one vBulletin board without a mobile option at all and one with both options.

I'm assuming there's a line of code that checks your browser and thus offers up the correct version for you: wouldn't it be possible to, say, press a button that would override that check?

Sorry if I'm underestimating the work involved.

On the subject of phones, I'd heard of BlackBerry, and here it is. It is less powerful compared to the competition, has a smaller selection of apps, and frustrates me to hell at times, but I do like other things about it, like the keyboard (although I prefer the one on the Bold).

If you can afford awesomeness, the Lenovo x230t is pretty darn cool: laptop and tablet in one. Want....

The Lenovo does look good but I don't want Windows, I want Android; I'm so tired of Microsoft and ready to be done with them and use Google already for my browser. I have a Barnes and Noble Nook and looked at their new tablet in my consolidation considerations but it's the 7 instead of the 10 inch one and that's too much like a phone, my Blackberry screen driving me crazy as well as costing me an arm and a leg.

The "true" full sites don't fit well on a phone, you can imagine, and the cost to the phone user of all that non-workable (you get X's instead of images, for example) and need to scroll; you have to write a program to get things to adjust for the phone's size instead of the "full size" one can expect on a computer and not take up more "size" than 3G can handle for size as well as speed. Think about your phone data limitations "full" means more bandwidth (your phone does not have a zillion gigabytes of storage for programs AND data like your computer does); it's streamingish and the better your phone can do that, the more expensive it is for you; you want more expensive? :-) Looking at my own, un-rewritten-for-phones sites on my Blackberry screen, I almost get nauseous, the "result" is so not usable.

Think too about it as a computer program to make a web site on a computer versus a different program to make a web app on a phone; the web site is not quite the same as the web app, not just because of the operating systems with their different browsers (Microsoft and Apple versus phones/iPad or Android); a PC pretty much is accustomed to doing what Microsoft/Windows "decided" with their GUI and browser (remember the Explorer versus Netscape wars that Netscape lost; one use to have to design web sites to work on both browsers?) well, now you have a totally different technology; we're not talking just smaller, but wholly different to fit/work on phones and iPads/tablets. 3G (and starting on 4G) is not "cable"/dial-up/fios and does not work the same.

I just want to be able to see the full version. I use Opera Mini with the single column viewing so for most sites I don't have to scroll left or right. I might have to bust out my kindle and use boat browser since it has an option to "trick" websites into desktop mode, but I really prefer my phone.

If you post what kind of device you're using and want the full site enabled, we can edit the configuration to allow for that. We've just enabled the full site for Opera Mini now.

OH my GOSH that would be so great!!!!!! I have a Samsung Galaxy Tab (the original version..there is a number at the way bottom that says 10.11...I don't know if this is a version or something....)

I hope you can do this, I do enjoy being able to access the site on my tablet but definitely would LOVE the full site option (the mobile one doesn't show everything either!)

I don't know if they should change it for the stock browser; Opera Mini is something you download, and if I want the mobile site, I can use the built-in browser. You can download Opera Mini for the Android, think. If you have something like Firefox or Dolphin (I think that's what it's called), I think it would be more likely for them to offer the option.

Not to mention Opera Mini makes it usable: you can set it so that everything fits your screen, and you don't need to scroll all over the place. It would be really bothersome to have to zoom in and out the whole time.

hmm ok thanks i'll see if it is available, I didn't think Opera Mini was available for droid, that's would be nice tho, I had an Iphone before and I liked that browser. I just got this phone. I don't have to zoom in and out tho, but maybe it is because this phone has a 5" screen, I dunno.

EDIT: Got it, thanks so much Bark! I didn't even think to use a different browser duh! I am just happy to have the full site on my phone because I use it so much, so thank you for the help.

so much easier...

the older model just had vibrations...some radioactive inconsistency in elemental co-ordinates...so annoying!

upper atmosphere tests were inconclusive so just gotta go with it for now

It's a NetFront Browser V3.5. Any chance of being able to have the real thing? Please! X
