Can anyone tell me what's going on with my computer that's keeping me from downloading from microsoft? I would like to download the new beta IE 7, or the beta defender.

Whenever I try, it says "this page cannot be displayed". However, microsoft advances to thanking me for my download (or something like that).

I've tried cleaning cache, etc. Also, I'm validated there and have updated everything, including hardward stuffs. I just can't get the free downloads.

I don't get it. Microsoft downloads

Any help would be appreciated. I really want to check out the new IE 7 beta. It's supposed to be like opera, but is IE (multiple tabs, etc.).

Thanks!

KD

I was wondering if you have a firewall or some program that stops the page from loading

Yeah..... maybe a firewall that is blocking MSN - or their cookies.

Nope. The only firewall I have running is the windows run, and I even disabled it to try it. I also snoozed my Etrust virus protection. I don't have the firewall running with that. Maybe somehow it's in the background doing something?

Is there a way I can check? I know it has to be something like that, but I don't know how to check what might be running that I don't know about.

Thanks, guys.

Hmm...I just downloaded and installed that a couple days ago, but I don't recall having problems with it. I had problems with other installs, but that's another story.

I don't recall any popups involved, but do you have your popup blocker on while trying to download? That's about the only thing I can think of. Sorry I'm not of more help.

Hmm - one again all I can think of is that MSN is being blocked from your computer..... check your Internet Options and make sure the site or its affiliates are not blocked of placing cookies on your computer (even that of pop up ads will do it - if it has msn.com attached to it any where).

BTW - I am having a similar problem with my older computer.... I cannot update from Microsoft at all on the computer, but my new comp is fine.

to see what is running hit control, the alt key and delete it will bring up a task manager. if that does not give you info then go to start, run, and the command msconfig it will bring up a lot of info you can adjust what is loading in there. if you change something it will want to restart. hope this helps.

Thank you so much. I give up. Microsoft downloads

I went into run/msconfig and disabled all (thank you for reminding me of that command because it's something I've been wanting to do...slow startup). Anyhow, it didn't work either. Microsoft downloads

It has to be in internet settings or something (I restored them to default as well). I just don't know. Microsoft downloads

Thank you again.

You could download the Mozilla browser and use that to download IE (giggle). Why do you need IE?

Jenny,

I thought of that, actually, and if I even try to download the plug-in for mozilla it says that download.com couldn't be found...this page can't be displayed...blah, blah, blah. Thanks, though. I can't download the plug-in because it comes from microsoft downloads...i can't even access that site.

I can do anything with MSN, etc., though, Rhapsody. Thanks too. I'll let you know if I find out. I'm still thinking that it has to be in my internet "advanced settings". However, I don't know enough about the settings to go in there and start playing around. Microsoft downloads

Thanks again.

Kimmydawn could you try something for me...go to start menu open control panel...find add/remove programs...then find microsoft internet explorer 6 with sp1 and internet tools...highlight this file and click on add/remove radio button...a box will come up with some choices for you...1)Add a componant...2)repair internet explorer...3)reinstall previous version of IE...we want the second one...repair internet explorer...give that a shot and then try downloading IE 7...if this doesn't work then let's go ahead and reinstall whatever version of IE you had previously...this should be IE5...which is fine for now...try going and downloading IE6 right onto your desktop...if you can then reinstall IE6 and then try downloading IE7 again...I hope something here works for you...I have a few more ideas but lets try these first...okay

It sounds like something's definitely not set right. I was at download.com today, and it came up fine.

You can't download Mozilla through their .org site? Mozilla link

Then you uninstall old IE versions (first save/export bookmarks).

Then use Mozilla to download IE 7 beta.

I still don't understand why you need IE. Mozilla is far superior Microsoft downloads in my opinion

I can't play games on my mozilla for some reason. I LOVE mozilla. I like opera as well. I heard the new IE7 is alot like opera and does really good. I wanted to try it. I also heard about the beta "defender" and was going to look at it. Now, however, I'm obsessed as to why I can't pull up the downloads page at microsoft.

I'm petrified to uninstall my current IE, because what if I still can't access the downloads at microsoft to get it back? Microsoft downloads

I can update at microsoft, etc. Microsoft thanks me for my download, etc. However the new page for the actual download "cannot be displayed". I actually went into my restricted sites unrestricted some of them and scared the crap outta myself on my puter today.

I just don't know enough about the internet settings to know what could be blocking that specific page. Also, I went to troubleshooting and tried everything. Microsoft downloads

Pretty stuck.

Thanks, guys.

This problem may occur because of the existence of a corrupt or damaged Internet Explorer index file.

Delete the Index.dat file in IE's cache folder. The Index.dat file is re-created the next time that you log on to the computer.

I just skimmed messages, but I'm about to go to bed, so I might have missed this: Are you using a PC or a Mac? I'm not sure how to do it with a Mac, but if you want to see what processes are running (look at Processes, not just Applications), hit Control + Alt + Delete ONCE! If you hit it twice, it will reboot your computer. When the list comes up, if you want to turn off any of the programs (be careful doing this; make sure you know what you're shutting off!), select the name and hit "End Process." If you don't want to shut off anything, just click the "X" in the corner to close the window. I don't think this will help you find the problem, but it's possible. Good luck.

This is useful if a program freezes and you want to close it, by the way. If the whole computer is locked up, it may not work (the window may not come up), but if you want to close a program, just select it like I said above, and hit "End Process." For instance, I use Netscape, and if my browser freezes, I just select (under Processes) "netscape.exe" and hit the "End Process" button, and it quits; it might quit right away, or take a few seconds, but after that, I'm usually able to reopen the program and have everything function normally again.

Well, I just give up. Microsoft downloads

Thanks so much everyone.

I even purchsed "Eraser Tracks Pro" and erased the index.dat files, etc. I read about those as a result of the posting here. The up side? My computer's never been cleaner. Microsoft downloads

I just wonder if it's something in settings and downloading "beta software" and signatures, lack of, etc? I love finding answers to something where I don't know the cause, but when I start spending money on the straws I'm grasping, I need to let it go. LOL.

Thanks so much everyone.

I wonder if it is connected to the emergency patches microsoft put out last week... for problems and such someone found? Four of them! Maybe not directly connected...but might not play well with each other (it being Beta?) IDK. I just don't know.

I'm having "Serious Error" problems myself. Next stop: vendor Microsoft downloads
