"Quarantine," I think, is what some antivirus software calls one of the measures it takes against suspicious files. When one of the programs that I use finds a threat, it may offer me a choice of deleting the file, quarantining it, or ignoring it -- as if I knew!
![]() I don't know who'd be able to tell you more, but they'd probably need detailed information on the suspicious items and on the program(s) that found them suspicious. I think a lot of the people who know most about this stuff, work for antivirus companies like McAfee and don't like to give away information. |

This may be helpful:
Clean, Quarantine, or Delete? Remove & Isolate suspicious files, Quarantine Files | Internet Security Help You really need to know what it is and what it may have done as Fooze said. It seems logical that if quarantining these items hasn't had a negative impact then deleting them would be safe. They are very likely either false positives or items that can be safely deleted... toolbars etc . |

Thank you both... the advanced security system I use does tell me the link of the element... just don't want to click on anything... will keep them in my bug jar for two weeks... and if everything goes as it should... then will eliminate the little buggers.... I am a good user, but too impatient with the black screen and 0000 and 11111's... also the several other systems I run for my business go thru a web server... never receive these from there? LOL

quarantining the files takes them pretty much out of commission. it isolates the suspicious malware from affecting your pc. Basically if they are files you needed, and they get quarantined, then you'll find that something won't work, a program. I have never had anything quarantined that was a needed file but not saying it can't happen. Think of it like the recycle bin for your deleted items. The files are moved out of your main sections of your hard drive but kept in a temporary bin until you delete them completely. A "safety net" so-to-speak, in case you changed your mind. in the same way quarantined files are put in a "bin". They no longer will cause you trouble, and if no adverse effects from them being quarantined, you're safe to remove them.

The hard part comes when the antivirus program quarantines something that you do need for normal functioning of your system, but you're not sure if it's really infected or just a false positive. A couple of years ago I lost the use of Java (and later found an important Java file quarantined). Rather than take chances, I downloaded Java again from scratch.
I'd guess that the timestamp on a file wouldn't reliably show whether the file had been tampered with. If malware accessed the hard drive directly, bypassing the normal file system, it could probably make a timestamp say anything it wanted. One would hope that antivirus software would be on the lookout for that kind of activity. |

So then it does not affect anything as long as they are safely locked in the jar? Correct

correct. It's essentially a fixed problem but made so you can go back if necessary (re activating the files) but that usually doesn't need to happen.

One more thing I'd point out. When you change AV progs, your quarantined files get dumped along with the other files in the old prog.

Anti-virus applications can detect false positives at times so I set up my software to automatically quarantine the files just to be safe.

So... I believe my latest system scan wiped out a tool/program that I need to participate in the chat... what should I reinstall? Not going to open my bug jar? Thanks
