Why is it that the chat uses RealChat? A system that requires you to have flash for connections (flash is known for problems; especially issues it has on Macs and other systems). Plus flash is NOT very portable. Most mobile devices no longer use it or its deprecated or not supported on mobile device (either way eal chat DOES NOT work on mobile) Why can it just be IRC? IRC is been used for a long time, its stable and fairly easy to use. For the non-technically inclined users you could just put up a web client. Plus, on mobile devices... a user could simply use their favorite IRC client. Thoughts?
(I just really want to be able to use chat on mobile devices; which at this time I can't) |

I think there may be a change in the system. So mobile devices-smartphones and tablets may access the chat room. I am just not aware of all the details, just that the system will be more compatible with more devices. I am sure Dr John will know more.

This can be where survivors search for mother and father figures. Transference issues in counseling can occur and this is normal for childhood abuse survivors. |

The answer is because we've used the same, reliable chat system here since 2006 -- long before mobile devices became so popular. Our members are comfortable with it, understand how it works, and so we've kept it.
Now that mobile devices are so commonplace, we're looking to upgrade to a new system this fall that fully supports mobile devices called Parachat.

Are you trying to use chat on a mobile device?
Like on an iPhone or iPad? There's an web browser app called Puffin that allows you to use flash so you can get on chat through your iPhone/iPad. I do not know if this app works on Android or anything, but it's worth a try. |

Parachat seems okay, apart from the one critical fact... it makes no allowances for people with accessibility issues, i.e. anybody using a screen reader for example - just a thought.
Can't we just switch to IRC? |

No, we are not moving to IRC, sorry. Too many issues using the IRC protocol; we've tried it in the past and it just wasn't worth it.
I'm not aware of any of our members who use a screen reader to access chat.

What about the possibility of running both chat engines along side each other, and seeing which one users would prefer to keep?

Nope, sorry, we don't have the resources to do so. Thanks for your feedback.
