All of a sudden this site seems to have an auto-censoring function. If you write even a moderately naughty word, it bleeps it out for you. What's up with that? I find it infantalizing. It kind of bothers the very corners of my soul. Really, we can talk about sexual abuse and self-injury and all manner of trauma and angst but so much as a casual reference to, say, bodily waste, a rude word for copulation or even a perfectly innocent synonym for donkey and people are casting about for their smelling salts? Come now.

Do you guys love having one small corner of your world that gives you a little respite from all that profanity? Do you feel like you're in kindergarten? Are your free speech feelings hurt?

If I knew how to make this into a poll I would! Anyone?

I believe when we signed up to the site we agreed to abide by community guidelines. As an Australian swearing is my first language. All we can do is try to get guidelines chnged etc etc.

I don't particularly mind it as I don't care to read other peoples' foul language, but I do find it funny when it censors a perfectly normal word because the censor only reads the word in one possible context. I'm used to this issue because I work for a school district that has censors on all computer access.

I can remember trying to put together quick synopses of novels for a research project, and I couldn't search for Moby D i c k. Cracked me up. Yes, it may be frustrating, but that's the way this forum is designed, so we can choose to deal with it or move on.

I think it's so wrong to discriminate against Australians! Especially the artists!

When I first joined just a year ago, it seems like the bleeping wasn't so stringent. Or maybe I'm just misremembering? I think I starred the "u" in ****, and it showed up like that. Now the filter is smarter, and it recognizes and bleeps even the **** with a starred "u." Meh, I curse a lot but I'm not bothered by it either way. People can fill in the gaps of the bad words I'm saying with or without a filter.

Well, yeah, maybe the Australians can but what about those poor community members who may not be as fluent in Swear? Think of them.

Feck that!

It does seem silly, but home team rules. And it has always been that way.

It may seem ridiculous at times, and I certainly wouldn't object to language for reasons of decorum; but that said, I do think such language in life, being often resorted to in anger, could easily be triggering to some posters. Since it's an easily preventable trigger, I can live with the restrictions.

It's sad that someone in the books and movies thread innocently said that they were reading Moby **** and it was of course censored. I'm not a fan of censorship. People here have gone through so much, I have a hard time seeing swear words as being a fraction of traumatic than actual events in people's lives.

Yes it gets on my ******* ****ing nerves too! I mean really how do we survive in the real world where people can and do say what ever the **** they want? It's just more ****** censorship in our quest to protect and be Politically correct and then when we are not on the forum we can resort to our true ****ing selves. Kind of like going to Church

What got me that the chat used to censor Fukushima... which doesn't even contain a real swear word.

It also used to censor our lunches and dinners (chicken and turkey b r e a s t), but I believe that got changed.

And meanwhile racisms gotten through smoothly.

Apparently I like to say **** and *** a lot. I wouldn't normally agree with seeing words like **** and ****, but **** and *** aren't that bad at all! I agree, freedom of speech and stuff.

I can assure you that for those who've been spoken too in such derogatory terms while enduring rape and sexual abuse (especially as children) these kinds of words are triggers and do not serve the spirit of this community which is to help people heal.

I'm sorry if you're offended that you can't freely use foul language here, there are plenty of other sites out there that do permit it though, so perhaps you can trash talk there while being respectful here?

Meanwhile, fupped duck works for that one expletive, and motofoto works for the other, fudge covers a multitude of sinful words deliciously, and my all time favorite will always be Holy @#$%!

Sincerely,
Pfrog!

I hear ya...I'm not an Aussie and my first language is swearing. My mom used to tell me I could embarrass a sailor with the language I used.

I have to say though, I appreciate that I have to think of and use different adjectives to explain where I'm at and how I'm feeling. It makes my brain work a little bit harder and that's a good thing in my opinion. Learning to be a bit more creative can be quite a challenge sometimes but I do enjoy it for the most part.

Just an FYI, I know you folks think that since this is an American site that we should be given the "free speech" option. This is a privately owned site and as such, we don't have to offer "free speech". We do have guidelines and such that we all agreed to when we created our membership here. I guess nothing in life is always the way we would prefer it to be.

In the mean time, I hope ya'll are able to get the support you are looking for and even if we are bleeped out now and again, believe me, most folks can figure out what you are saying.

Thanks for this!

Bleeping is not censorship. It's editorial policy.

Censorship says, "You can't publish that."

Editorial policy says, "I am not going to publish that. Good luck on getting it published elsewhere."

I think more like this is an American site and Americans are all pretty uptight when it comes to "bad" words, I hear they don't swear on TV and stuff that is foreign to me.

I'll adapt to that, even though it does seem silly to me, but bit of culture clash I suppose.

Folks, we haven't significantly changed the profanity filter's word list since 2001, when we first started. In the past 5 years, we've added maybe 4 or 5 additional words.

We have a long history of tolerating a certain, mild level of profanity. But the word list seriously hasn't changed that much in the 12 years this community has been online. Because nothing's significantly changed with our word list, I'm going to close this thread. Our editorial standards in the community aren't up for debate, and if you need a community where "anything goes," we're probably not the community for you. Sorry.

Best,
DocJohn
