What about a sub-forum in Creative for Song Lyrics and related posts?

it is warranted but this is just a thought ....

I would like his input also, as we used to not be allowed to post copyrighted material, such as the song lyrics often seen there. If it's our own stuff, that would be kewl to read, imo. A suggestion (or thought) ....

Well, we're allowed to post copyrighted articles, works, etc. here...they should just be given proper credit by linking to the site or stating the name of the original author. A suggestion (or thought) .... The exception to that would be copying and pasting something here when it expressly states that the owner/author has asked it not be done.

Actually, the most appropriate way to post another's words is to give a preview of the work, then link to the article/complete work. However, with quotes, songs, etc., many post the entire work and state the author's name...giving credit.

It's just not cool to post a creative work without giving credit to the author in some form.

I'm pretty sure I've spoken correctly on the issue. If I've misspoken, I hope DocJohn clarifies when he responds. A suggestion (or thought) ....

Yep, I'm curious to see what the big guy thinks of this idea as well. A suggestion (or thought) ....

Yes, if he has special consideration regarding posting copyrighted material here that would be fine. Just because someone gives credit does not give legal rights to use copyrighted material, btw. A suggestion (or thought) ....

If this is true, there isn't a need for a sub category, as all our material wouldn't fill a forum, imo. A suggestion (or thought) ....

I was going to be cool with this idea, but after reading up on the topic, posting of song lyrics without the author's permission is likely a copyright violation and could lead to us being sued if we encouraged such postings (e.g., by creating a whole forum just for such postings).

Now, I can't be sued for people who find song lyrics posted elsewhere on the Internet and link to those lyrics (since a link isn't the same as posting the lyrics themselves). However, if you just want to discuss such lyrics, not sure if we need a new forum to cover that or not.

So, generally speaking, you should not post song lyrics or someone else's poetry without first obtaining their permission.

Sorry...

DocJohn

Oh, thank you for the information!

We learn something new every day and this is really good to know.

I thought as long as credit to the author was given, it was OK. However, actual permission is needed to do it publicly then.

So songs and poetic works are a bit different than posting then linking to articles, etc?

I think I have it now. A suggestion (or thought) ....

Thanks, docJohn and sky!

Ummm, then Doc is gonna have to delete almost the entire Creative Forum. A suggestion (or thought) ....

We'll need a "reminder" posted in the General Forum and Creative. Also in Social and Kudos too. Let's not forget the Spiritual Forum which has has lyrics and scripture quotations etc.

If it's our own stuff, that would be kewl to read, imo.

I actually have pieces of writing here that have lyrics in them that have been published in 3D. A suggestion (or thought) ....

Do you think I need to have them deleted, _Sky? A suggestion (or thought) ....

I also used a snippet from the bible in one of them and now that I'm looking it up, I'm confused.

Example...
Scripture quotations marked NASB and NASU are taken from the NEW AMERICAN STANDARD BIBLE®, Copyright © 1960,1962,1963,1968,1971,1972,1973,1975,1977,1995 by The Lockman Foundation. Used by permission.

Do you think if I put a link to an online site that has printed it by permission, that would cover me? A suggestion (or thought) ....

Snippets from people's works are okay -- that's covered under "fair use." However, when people post song lyrics, they post the entire song, and that's not covered under fair use.

We police all copyright violations through the standard DMCA notification process, meaning we do not pre-moderate comments or posts. We only act when someone brings it to our attention that (a) they believe a copyrighted work has been posted and (b) they are an authorized agent for the author or creator of the copyrighted work.

In other words, it's up to individual members to understand the law and act accordingly. We're not the police, though, and we're not going to take on that role either here.

I didn't realise posting lyrics would be subject to such strict copyright laws! Afterall, lyrics are so freely available.

There are so many lyric sites out there - I guess they all get permission to post lyrics. That must be quite a task since some sites are huge with literally 100's of different artist's lyrics posted.

Oh well, guess I won't be posting lyrics anymore and most certainly, a new forum wouldn't be necessary just to discuss lyrics.

Thanks for all the info and input! Interesting indeed!
