what about creating a social group on something you feel is fun then inviting your friends to join in. this way you will be able to talk about all the fun stuff you feel you are missing out on. there is also private messaging. this is where you and your friends can message each other to talk about fun things. there is also a game forum, social forums where you can also create threads and post about things you feel are fun.
you can also go through the process of becoming a chat leader and holding your own chat discussions on something if you dont see any chats on that issue. |

I have found that the rules are there so that its safe for everyone that is in the chat room at that moment. Its impossible to know what each and every members trigger is so the site has general rules to follow. but the site is also very flexible. you can discuss things you want to just has to be done in a safe way. one thing I keep in mind is that psych central is a mental health website. its here for learning about mental illness, and having a way to discuss our mental illness problem. suggestion maybe you can google twerking and what ever other topics you seem offended that psych central does not allow and I bet there will be many chat rooms scattered around the internet where those things are discussed with no boundaries or limitations that you seem to find offensive here. that way you can have the best of both worlds. psych central for discussing your mental disorder issues and the other places for non mental disorder issues and if you choose to become a chat leader here or start your own social group here. |

it was just an example... and if i make my own room, i'm still supposed to follow all the rules...... you're not ever going to please everyone, ever in life. if we cater to everyones triggers and whims, um, there wouldn't be anything left to talk about, which is the way it is heading.

Nope, we don't cater to everyone's "triggers and whims," we ask that members abide by the community guidelines and specific rules for chat (such as no explicit sex talk, since this isn't a dating site). We ask that members respect one another, and move to the appropriate room when the conversation takes a more mature turn (e.g., adult) or emotional turn (emotional support).
We ask that members practice self-care first and foremost and don't use chat if they are in a place where they may be easily hurt or offended. And if they do use chat, they place other members on ignore who they don't like (or don't like what they say). Nothing's changed, rule-wise, with chat for quite some time, so I'm not sure what this specific piece of feedback is referring to. It's up to the members to make the chat experience whatever they'd like to make it, we just set the foundation of what it cannot be (because we are first and foremost, a mental health community).

ya, i get that, but it doesn't happen... i guess you have to be there to know. i'm not talking about the sex talk. you've said on many threads there's other places for it, but it used to be a place to let off steam and have a laugh, ES is rarely ever used, coffeehouse is a catchall like a herd sheep mentality, and it's really just... not fun, like my original post said.

It has been much harder to be a mod these days, but I am holding in there. I tend not to let it bother me and keep on. I still see rules being broken and finding it hard to stop. Yes I remember the day we laughed much more.

I admit I was only ever in chat a couple of times so take my comment with that in mind...
Is it possible that people who are easily triggered or are otherwise...sensitive, have a NEED to report others? In other words, to they enter a chat with the explicit goal of reporting? That, in itself, is a need to be in control isn't it? Just pondering about people in my own life that seem to enjoy simply raining on parades and what the motivation is.. Ignore this if it doesn't apply. |

Sophiesmom, there are absolutely people who come in chat just to cause trouble. I see them every day.

Sophiesmom - nail on the head! There are those who enter chat with the need to control it's content and report anything or anyone who displeases or disagrees with them. Given this is a mental health website I try to understand the behavior in a certain frame of mind, unfortunately they do zap the fun out for everyone else

yea, but there's also a whole self care option as well, which i think should be used first. unless someone is clearly breaking the rules. which both can all be found in the FAQ. i'd literally been jumped on for asking people to go to es, because it clearly wasn't a topic of conversation for coffeehouse. reporting should only be used as a last resort in my opinion.

Agree ^_^
The different rooms should be utelised as they are intended and self care practiced. Hopefully this thread works as a reminder for those who have forgotten about those rules. I'm also all for a Hollow hosted chat ![]() |

I remember when chat was fun too. I haven't been to PsychCentral's chat, but I just mean chat in general. Something has shifted over the years, and I remember having a good time years ago. It could be that I am too old for chat now, I don't know. The only thing I can suggest is broaden your horizons and look in other places (chat avenue, paltalk, wireclub, etc.)

I agree, sometimes chat just isn't fun. I only pop on when I need company, usually while eating dinner, so I don't feel so alone. The hosted chats, with the exception of Doc's, all seem like a lecture to me so I don't go. PTSD chat was a nice place for a while where people just met and shared about their problems, but that all changed so I don't go anymore. I guess what I liked about that one was that we could talk about our real problems, and I didn't feel so alone. I still go to whichever room has active people to be not so alone, and I leave when I feel uncomfortable or have irl things to do.

So just a gentle reminder that it's not helpful (and against our community guidelines) to talk about other members in a thread, even if you don't name them. Everyone has issues and is dealing with things we may know little about. If you have a specific concern about a "trouble maker," report their behavior to a mod or admin to get something done. (If you don't want to get anything done about it, don't report it.)
"I miss the old days when things were like so-and-so..." is something we all say at some point in our life. I can't magically bring back "fun chat." Chat is exactly what its members make of it. If you want it to be fun, make it fun -- there's no guideline against having fun and sharing fun things in Coffeehouse (in fact, that's one of the reasons it's there). I encourage you to have as much fun as you'd like in chat, as long as you don't violate our community guidelines. Best, DocJohn
