just something I sometimes wonder...

I see a post is closed and the last post in the thread has almost the same wording every time, some go more in detail but the main sentence in the ending post is almost always....

I am closing this thread while the team discusses it. Please do not start another thread on this topic while it is being discussed.

(not just by one moderator so assuming its just how things are done)

my wonderings is on what after... no one comes back to these locked threads to say what happened afterwards. not the meetings between you all. but this wording makes me think someone is going to come back and say whether the thread is going to remain closed and if the topic is forever off limits. everyone is just held hanging on a cliff hanger of the team is discussing the thread.

like waiting for the next weeks tv show episode.

ok we are going to discuss this so its locked then just hang around waiting.

when i get in this thinking look I go looking and wow it was locked so many months or years ago. are they still discussing it. no one came back to it so must be.

no wonder you all are so busy discussing locked threads for months and years. (just kidding)

my point how about if you are going to lock a thread not for a reason but for discussion someone comes back to the thread and says something like a reason why the post is remaining closed. I mean how is anyone going to know why a thread was remaining closed and whether you are still discussing it, if no one comes back to say whats what. whether a new thread can be started now....

(yes my mind is in ocd mode but would love an answer.)

Threads are closed because one or more of the posts contained within the thread violate one or more of the community guidelines. If you review the community guidelines, you can usually detect which posts are seemingly in violation in them in a closed thread. That's the explanation. I'm not sure there's much additional value in having us spell it out for each thread, as it's usually one member posting unsupportively toward another, talking about another member, or acting in some other way not in accordance with the guidelines.

Whenever possible, we try and simply remove the one or two offending posts in a thread and leave the thread open. However, when the thread moves faster than we have the time to get to it, there may be 4, 5 or a dozen offending posts by the time we've all reviewed it. At that point, the amount of work it takes to try and prune the thread in a way that still allows it make sense is usually more than it's worth, especially if the topic was so controversial to begin with.

I know to see such notices can be frustrating, but they simply indicate that the thread has become unsupportive and not really in keeping with our mission here as a mental health emotional support community.

Best,
DocJohn

yea i understand that, my point was the wording you all are using to close the threads makes it sound like you will be coming back to these closed threads to either reopen them or explain why its staying closed.

if you look at the blanket statement that is being used you will see the word "while"......

I am closing this thread while the team discusses it. Please do not start another thread on this topic while it is being discussed.

I just thought it was funny and strange the other night and it brought up the question of whether you all were planning on coming back to the closed thread....

I felt it was kind of misleading since you all never come back to the closed threads. they all seem to remain closed or removed after you initially close them.... just one of those how you word it kind of things.... I was curious as to why the word .... while.... was in there... if you really intended to come back to the threads of if the statement was worded strangely/ misleadingly...

I think DocJohn was saying they close it momentarily to see if they can cut some posts out to reopen it but often times there is too much to cut out so it's just left locked. I hope you are not sitting there for yrs waiting for it to be reopened! Just assume if a thread gets locked, it'll stay locked!

Would it maybe be possible to post your decision? So:
*members fight*
Moderator: We're closing this thread for discussing, ..
(next day) Moderator: We've discussed it and are permanently closing this thread.

Then it's clear the thread won't be re-opened, but it doesn't put the burden of explaining all decisions on the moderating team, either.

attentionThis is an old thread. You probably should not post your reply to it, as the original poster is unlikely to see it.
