to read the forum rules too many times?

I've been here for several months and still can't remember the rules so have to regularly look at them to avoid getting run in

I guess it never hurts to read them too much

There are forum rules? Lol. I'm assuming I maybe read them at one point, but I dont remember.

I have learned the hard way that the rules on PC are extremely important. Seriously, every member should read them and know them. I still make mistakes sometimes, but I'm trying really hard not to.

I read them but don't remember them, which is the point I was making in this thread

Last thing I want is to have the rulebook thrown at me, I'm going to hide under here from any low flying rulebooks

I printed them out but was “run in” for violation where there was no rule covering my transgressions. I’m now trying to post ‘in the spirit of the rules’ using a Ouija board and divining rod.

I’m trying to be better. I like it here.

I admit, I haven't really glanced over them much. I think if you behave in a manner that is living by the golden rule standard and to not advertise outside the site(luring away types of things), pretty much, you will be fine.
I know there are other things on the rules list, but for me those are the two standards that are relevant in my mind, for my own conduct.

Maybe someone can post a "complete idiot"'s guide to the rules? if possible?

So "treat others how you want to be treated" kinda thing?

And don't spam, don't advertise anything, don't be a asshole?

I think there are also topics (like sex, politics, and religion) that we aren't supposed to talk about in chat.

I hope they don't come to our real life locations if we're about to get run in for anything

From this moderator's point of view, the answer is "No, it doesn't hurt to read them many, many times!" I admit, When I was new, I didn't read them at all until I received a pm from a moderator pointing out something that I posted that was against the guidelines. Now, I can truthfully say, I've read the guidelines hundreds of times!

Generally speaking, The Golden Rule is a good rule of thumb but it never hurts to read them for yourself. Here they are, Community Guidelines, check them out! When in doubt, go to FAQ/Help and you'll see the very first bullet says: "What are your Community Guidelines and where can I find them?"

If you look closely, you may see the blood, sweat and tears that have gone into the composition over years of trial and error. It's a work in progress and is wholeheartedly intended to give us a framework to keep us safe and running smoothly. Is it perfect in every circumstance? Maybe not, but it works very well. Do we get anyone coming to our door in real life if we're in trouble and are getting run in?

Oh gosh no Have you ever checked out the Anniversary Forum? There were various meetups all over for the big event. So many of us got to meet for the first time. Everyday people, volunteering and trying to keep running a place like PC.

I think something like that lifted the big veil of mystery.

It doesn't hurt to pm a moderator when in doubt of guidelines if the FAQ isn't clear.

Nope, don't even know what forums there are cause I either don't remember or because I tend to go through new posts I don't notice

I have been here more than 4 years and I read them at least once a week. I know most of them, but I don't have them committed to memory. Also, they get updated from time to time.

I've been a member here since 2005. I've been on the Community Support Team since 2007. Every single day I'm here I have to look at the Community Guidelines. LOL

Please remember, these are guidelines, not rules. We take into consideration a lot of different things when dealing with a thread/post that may be against guidelines. The Team all discuss the situation and come to a decision on how to deal with it. We try to work really hard with members to help them understand what went wrong and how they might do things a bit differently.

And no, we won't be knocking on your door.

Sorry if I came off unsupportive whispershadow. I was only trying to say that we use guidelines instead of rules. Rules imply that they are strictly adhered to. Guidelines can give us some wiggle room when deciding if a post/thread is over the guidelines to the point of being unsupportive or argumentative, etc.

It's my communication issues at fault, sabby, I tend to read too much into what people say when it's writ down

Even to the point where if someone says not to do something I can read into that them being angry at me even when there's not actually any anger intended (for example)

(and saying rules is just easier for me to spell) (and because I hate the number three here's another of these faces)

Well I am sorry if I am being uncalled, but I have never read the rules since I joined (yes, never even once) and I have still not received any warning by moderators. I have experience with other forums. And I know it's most of the times like this

1) Don't post pornography links.
2) Don't harass another member.
3) Don't use strong language.
4) Don't tell another member to commit suicide (I remember a mod said that threads or posts discussing suicide plans are not allowed.)
5) Do not promote any product.
5) Be friendly.

I am pretty sure the mods and the administrators read the rules daily/weekly just to make sure they're moderating/maintaining the community according to DocJohn's guidelines.


It's pretty much same over every forum (you can find on the surface web) and I wouldn't worry about someone knocking your door.

Yeah I've had experiences with other forums, several forums, and I know some forums make rules up as they go along, happened to me a few times now, they pretend there's a rule there when the rulebook says nothing about whatever I'm getting run in for (say for example one forum, there was a invisible rule about not upsetting the pet member, another forum there was a invisible rule about not trying to get better, another forum there was a invisible rule about cyber hugs not being allowed (that forum, guess how long I was on there before I thought stuff it and left)

The second forum I mentioned, one member said to me that they'd had the moderators knocking on their door about getting banned and they ran away and didn't answer the door, whether they was trying to wind me up idk

Just some examples I can think of off the top of my head where rules have been dreamed up by the moderators and not writ down
