I'm debating between a refurbished computer so I can keep XP, rather than a new one with Vista.

I've heard so much garbage about vista, and feel it should have been fixed by now. What say you?

I just bought a brand new computer, Sky, with Vista on it and I love it. I've had no problems with anything being compatable and just plug and playing. The only thing is my sound, which isn't loud enough, but I think that is a speaker issue.

I had XP and was scared too, but I think it's okay. Good luck.

I've heard Vista won't accept any word products/items. Will it accept txt documents even if it's from word? What about excel documents/spread sheets etc? Anyone have VISTA?

Hey, sky.

I bought a new laptop with Vista and I LOVE it...for my uses that is.

I don't know about it accepting word products/items, but...

Yes, I can download word docs and open them via works at any point.

I'm pretty sure that excel would be the same but not completely sure. Maybe someone else can answer that for you.

I can do anything and everything I did with my XL. There just seems to be a higher security with it. That said, I don't do alot. I get online and do some pics, few downloads and some docs. That's about it.

Do I think it's better than XP??? Nope. Again, to me and for what I do, it's about the same.

I've got 4 pc's, 1 with xp on, 1 with Ubuntu Server, 1 with XP and Vista, and newest with Vista. I've installed Vista when it's project name was still 'longhorn', and immediately removed it. Nóthing worked as intented. I also installed Vista beta 2(beta software is only for testing purposes), and expected it to work at least a little bit, but didn't do so at all. When Vista was officially released, I waited with installing as primary OS, because of véry weak security and problems in general: Vista just wasn't ready to be released yet: it didn't even work with nvidia audio chipset, which is probably the most widely spread éver.

2 weeks ago, I installed it on 2 machines, with an updated release: éverything worked immediately, I only had to install drivers for my graphics tablet, and behringer bcd2000(of which I don't even expect them to be in the standard package). I did still get really upset with all the 'security' pop-ups(really, éverything that happened, needed multiple clicks to finally be executed), but solved that problem by installing the pro version(think free version does it too) of TweakVista. I also removed sidebar, because I'm used too using yahoo widgets, which also uses a lot less system resources.

I do recommend using Vista only with software that's quite new, and always install older software in compatibilty mode for Windows XP SP2(right-click on setup-icon, click properties, click compatibility, choose XP).

Sky...I use XP on my desktop computer and Vista is on my laptop. I wasn't real excited about Vista...always issues with a new OS. But, it's worked pretty well so far.

As far as anything for microsoft word/excel etc. there is a free program you can download that is called OpenOffice. It's an awesome program and will open all microsoft files from word to excel to access etc. You can download it from

http://www.openoffice.org/ I think you will like it, it's pretty cool. Also, anything you compose in OpenOffice will be read by microsoft word, etc. Anyone have VISTA? Pretty cool eh?

Good luck!

I have 3 new machines with Vista on them (yes, I know... silly) and I absolutely can't stand it. I don't know if it's because of the machines themselves (all separate makes/models) or if it's Vista, but I'm finding it to be horribly unstable.

Haven't had any unexpected software compatibility problems, though.

I've heard mixed things about vista. They are sorting the bugs out, though, and it is starting to look like now is a good time to switch. Especially with respect to graphics and Direct X 10...
