I used to be able to do this, I think just by dragging. Now, I can't. Rather than go into favorites and find a site, I like to put most often used ones (links) on my task bar. Where or what blocker could be keeping this from happening now? I can't click and drag a site up onto the bar... not onto any task or menu bar. Putting links onto task bars (I had to make PC my home page just so it was easy to get here.)

I know this is simple. I just can't figure it out right now.

I just double checked, and no, the task bar isn't "locked." (Does that refer to where it is though?)

To add a page to the Links bar
If the Links bar is not already displayed, turn it on. To do this, click the Tools button, click Toolbars, and then select Links. (A check mark to the left of Links indicates that the bar is displayed.)
If you still cannot see the links bar, it's probably locked on the right side of the screen. To unlock the Links bar, click the Tools button, click Toolbars, and then click Lock the Toolbars to clear the check mark. Drag the Links toolbar down so you can see it.
Navigate to the webpage that you want to add to the Links bar, and then do one of the following:
Drag the icon (or the URL) for the page from the Address bar to the Links bar.
Drag a link from a webpage to the Links bar.
Note

You can organize the links by dragging them to different locations on the Links bar.

It's copied directly off the Help menu :-) I didn't know about it either. I found the Task Menu but didn't know about "clearing" the locked toolbars part. I finally got it working and decided I didn't want it but it was heck to turn off and get to go away again! LOL

I was excited (?) to realize I had forgotten about the links on the drop down... but it didn't help. Putting links onto task bars Now I'm back to frustration, because I used to just drag a site onto my IP task menu/tool bar and the icon would sit there waiting for me to click on it! Putting links onto task bars

Oh. I'm on the newer computer with vista. Putting links onto task bars

I had trouble getting it to work because of the idiot "lock toolbar" thing has to "flush" the checkmark; you have to click it and go away and come back and click it again before it will work.

Maybe your IP toolbar has an update/doesn't like Vista? I'd re-install it and see if that helps?

What browser are you using sky?

I have vista too and was able to do it no problem with firefox but I haven't tried with IE. I know how important this is because I rely on it HEAVILY.

OK, I just went and did it. Here are the instructions for IE, sky (you can't drag the address, but drag the icon). Also, you have to pull the separator (that shows the links bar off to the side over close to the address entry spot so that it's completely viewable):

Customizing the Links bar
Published: November 19, 2006

Did you know that you can customize the Links bar in Windows XP SP2, and Windows Vista? You can add, remove, or rearrange shortcuts to your Favorites and folders of Favorites. Customizing the Links bar gives you one-click access to your favorite folders, and webpages.

Here's how:

To enable the Links bar in Windows XP SP2 and Windows Vista

• Right-click on the Windows Taskbar. Click on Toolbars, and then click Links to select it (a checkmark will be displayed beside it)

You will now see "Links" added just to the left of the system tray on the taskbar.

To add a shortcut to the Links bar

• Drag the webpage's icon from the Address bar of the browser

• Drag a link from a webpage directly to the Links bar

• Drag a folder path from a search window to the Links bar

• Click the Add to Favorites/Bookmarks button in your browser, and then click Add to Favorites/Bookmarks. NOTE: If you are using a different browser this feature may not be implemented, or may work differently

• In the Add to Favorites dialog box, click the Create In dropdown list, and then select Links

To remove a shortcut from the Links bar

• Right-click the shortcut in the Links bar, and then click Delete

To rearrange how your Favorites show on the Links bar

• On the Links bar, drag a shortcut to a new location

To enable the Links bar in your browser
NOTE: This feature may not be implemented, or may work differently, in different browsers.

• Click the Tools button, click Toolbars, and then click Links

To add a shortcut to the Links bar

• Click the Add to Favorites button, and then click Add to Favorites

• In the Add to Favorites dialog box, click the Create In dropdown list, and then select Links

You can also drag the webpage's icon from the Address bar or drag a link from a webpage directly to the Links bar.

• In the Favorites Center, drag a shortcut to a new location in the Links folder

After you've made space on the navigation bar to see them at all times, you can then right click them and select "rename" and shorten it to see more at one time. For instance PC's webpage name is pretty long, so I changed it to say "PC forums", etc.

Ok, I found that I have another "bar" at the lower left of my normal lower right menu bar. The "links" bar is way up on the far right, and isn't "there" but the >> to get to it... how do I move this links bar to the middle of my page so I can see any icons I might get onto it??? Putting links onto task bars

Some days, you know?

Yes, sky, there are "dividers" there where if you hold your cursor over them the + will appear and you can drag that back closer to the address line and open that links area to view the links at all times.

Once you've done that, you can right-click and rename them to a shorter name to allow for more being viewed.

I hope that made sense. Putting links onto task bars

Another thing one can do is take a blog or a personal web space and put up links. I have a page I do that with and I just keep that open or open it when I want a particular link:

Putting links onto task bars

Then on my home page, I have a generic button to send an email so if I have new links I just put them in an email to myself :-) until I have time to add them to my list.

It won't move, but the lower left bar works fine. The upper right won't move, and I think because it is from my using tabs for my pages.
