I got this message from Windows that I needed to install a 2009 virus protection program when I turned on my computer this evening. I went thru the process of installing it, letting it scan my computer for viruses, and found that it cost $49. I decided I didn't want to spend that money, so I closed the program, but it keeps popping up, wanting me to purchase it. Also, all kinds of other popups are coming up, so I checked and my popup blocker was turned off. I turned it back on, but still getting all kinds of popups.
I'm doing an Adaware free full-system scan as I write this. They usually quarantine all suspect programs.
I just wondered if anyone else is experiencing this?

(((((((((((((((( seeker )))))))))))))))))))

I haven't been getting any of that but I use trend micro for all my security needs and mine doesn't run out for a few months. I hope you get this resolved soon, I hate popups. Are you feeling any better?

Yes, I AM much better, after a good rest with lots of cold meds, my daughter and her family came here and we had the nice Thanksgiving with my aunt.

The popups...I sense that this is something going on with Windows to sell this virus program! I hope not so.

Seeker1950,
Ignore it. Sounds like a phishing scam.

I had my hard drive repaired a few months ago, and they installed Avast.com. It's a free spyware/anti-virus system, etc. that works very well.

Hi, hon.

I've had that issue before. Ad-aware completely resolved it for me. I hope it does for you as well.

Let us know?

I use Avast! too and I love it. It found so many things that Norton totally missed and they were viruses that were common! Plus, it's totally free and updates as needed.

I think you need to go in and uninstall whatever program it was that you installed, download Avast!, let it scan your entire system, shut down and do another scan. It took a few times of doing that, but it got rid of everything and I have had no problems since.

Just remember that there are MANY programs that pop up saying something like, 'you may have spyware/malware on your computer. Click here to scan.' DON'T do it, they pop up in random websites and put numerous cookies, spyware, etc on your system. It is such a pain to remove that kind of stuff.

Good luck.

Yep, that popup was for a scam artist trying to sell you a likely useless product.. its a setup, fooling you into thinking that Windows is telling you something, when in reality its just a popup.

Can you tell me some more things, like the name of the program that you downloaded? I might be able to find more information about how to remove it and fix it.

Until then, I reccomend the following:

Ad-aware - scan and fix
Spybot search and destroy - scan and fix
Antivirus scan and fix

And try going here:
http://housecall65.trendmicro.com/

let it run a scan and fix if you can.

patty, hi!
here's what you prolly need to do...
goto the windows menu and select 'add or remove programs.'
remove the AV program correctly.
goto the startup menu and remove the bugger that's there and asking for money.
adaware is definitely capable of finding spyware. this is something that you actually installed however. when using adaware make sure your spyware definitions are up-to-date.
if you feel certain that you've been compromised then i encourage you to set up a software firewall so you can find out which applications among the ones installed on your machine are sending out data over the internet and purge the villianous ones.
hang in there sweetie, there's a light at the end of the tunnel.
