Looking at the "who's online" link, I've noticed the large number of "guests" who are always viewing the threads here. Usually more guests than actual members are viewing. I wonder how others here feel about this.
I guess this is the nature of a public forum, but in a way, it makes me feel paranoid!

((((((( seeker ))))))))

In any forum there are going to be guests reading. I think it is a good idea on the internet not to give out too much personal information and then there are no worries.

I view it as people who are possibly thinking about joining. Many may actually be members just reading that haven't signed in and some may be members who have more than one window open. It's a good place lets hope any new people feel it is a safe place to join and find help.

They're just shy. I signed up in order to take the quizzes. I forget how I actually found the site. Some people just take some time to sign on because of paranoia like I have. I can't begin to say how many sites end up barraging me with spam. Thankfully that has not happened here.I suppose others come on as guests so no one can follow their activities. Though What the Heck. Not too many people are public with their names. So it's pretty anonymous anyway. (darn, I thought I had mispelled a word, but spell check said it was right)

Seeker, twice in the last week I was logged in, wandering around reading and posting. Then all of a sudden I'd get a screen telling me I was guest and could not post. Maybe something similar is happening to others?!?!

I think the reason that was happening was because the system saw you as idle for too long a time and automatically signed you out. If you wish to remain logged in until you physically log yourself out, you must tick the box next to your log in name that says "Remember Me". That way the system will not auto log you out after a certain length of time. It helps too if you are making a long post/pm to someone and you go to send it....woops...logged out and it's lost "Remember Me" helps

(((((((( Patty )))))))))

There is such a vast amount of information at Psych Central and so many folks looking for it on the net. We are bound to have a lot of guests reading our articles, taking our quizzes and perusing the forums to see if it's something they would like to join.

Well, I don't think anybody I know would visit PC unless I told them about it, so I'm not too concerned if people I never have, nor will know offline read about me.

I was quite surprised the other day to find that a guest had posted a thread. I do not recall the forum, but the memeber name was not under the name of the thread. I thought it was from someone that had cancelled their membership and therefore became anonymous so I looked just to be nosy. But the OP of the thread was listed as guest. I didn't know they could post. I thought the new rules on this site were that even new members had to have their innitial threads approved. Any ideas on this?

As for guests looking, I concider anything I post online public information anyway. There are a few issues that I would very much like assistance with, but I will not post them here because I'm afraid the information would be hurtful to a loved one.

Considering the total number of internet-users and how great a website PC is , there should be many guests out there.

Any member who has posted and is listed as "Guest" is a member that has left PC and asked to have their account removed. Folks who come to PC as a guest to look around and search for articles can not post. One has to become a member in order to post

guests can't read social groups, just forums.
sometimes a guest is just a member who didn't log in and is reading.
were i using a public computer i would not logon either.

my only concern was when i first joined and the site asked me for my full name, i gave it and did not realize that it was publicly available. i modified my profile 3 months later.
on many sites ones name and email are required but kept private. hence the confusion. but i get such a benefit from this place that i can certainly overlook the small things.

Your "name" field is not available to other users. It is a "hidden" private field and used for internal purposes only.

I am just struggling to figure out things on this site. I need help and support - and have registered. Yes there are a lot of "guests" - that is how I decided I wanted to join as I was able to "view" the goings on. Thanks for listening.
