My T had me look up the meaning of these words assertiveness, thought re-direction, and mindfulness, and i thought i would share, bc i know these words are some of my problems. #1 Assertiveness- self assured, confident, without being aggressive, there is no question where you stand no matter the topic, a lack of anxious thoughts in light of stress. Reacting to positive, and negitive emotions without aggression, or resorting to passivity. This is one of my problems, i am not Assertive. #2 Thought Redirection- Being able to redirect negative thoughts to positive thoughts. This also i am unable to do, but i hope to learn. #3 Mindfulness= bringing one's attention to the internal, and external experiences occurring in the present moment, witch can develope with meditation and other training, This i also need to learn.

This exercise was meant to help you recognize your challenged areas. When someone has experienced a major Trauma, or even several Traumas and PTSD develops, the individual tends to become very sensitive and "react' more. By becoming aware of the areas that are challenged and rebuilding and reinforcing new skills, it is supposed to gradually improve your sense of self again. This exercise is not designed to be critical of who you are as a person, you have been hurt and you are experiencing challenges because of that hurt so what you are merely doing is discovering the areas that you struggle so you can work on strengthening those areas.

I would expand on this to include to be careful as you think about all this. You can't just be more assertive. That kind of CBT stuff won't work in this context, and you run the risk of experiencing what you perceive to be another failure. You might consider a pretty frank discussion with your T about why you were supposed to look these up.

Sounds like some DBT training. Where is she going with this? It's always good to know the terminology when you go into these programs. One thing is that it will make you feel more confident in discussing the topic, by knowing what the terms involved mean. Did she mention DBT training? You may want to Google that and see where these terms apply to this training to maybe give you a broader understanding. Good job!

Have you ever done DBT? I haven't, but I've heard some pretty good stuff about it. I could have access to a therapist that specializes in DBT, but I pay out of pocket, and I'm already leaking a lot of money...

I don't know what DBT is, and haven't heard anything about it.

That sounds very difficult. I don't know if my T is going in that direction.

It's not that difficult. I went to a group setting where they taught DBT but you have to be in the right place to absorb it. Some of the people in the group were there for their second and third times. Some for a refresher, some felt like they just didn't get it all the first time. DBT is just learning coping skills really.

Good to hear from you Yes, seems like there's a lot going around right now for a lot of people. Kinda like a big cosmic cloud of bad things going on. Hope it lifts soon so people will not have as much ca ca to deal with. Keep your appt. and let us know how that goes, if you want to share.
