I'm not sure that this post belongs in "Coping with Emotions" but I figured I'd put it here since my last post leading to this one is here.
So this afternoon I have an appointment with my doctor to discuss the possibility of issues with anxiety/depression/chemical imbalance. I'm a little nervous, mostly because I have no idea what to say or what to expect the doctor to say at this point. Any advice? |

Good Morning Nina,
Just be honest with your dr. Tell him how you feel and I'm sure he will offer some advice. He may refer you to a therapist, which wouldn't be a bad thing. My dr. gave me meds for my anxiety and asked me to see a therapist, which I found on my own and am seeing now. Best of luck to you and let us know how it turns out. |

Hey Nina,
In my experience, some family doctors are pretty good with mental health issues, and some are not. It really depends on your GP. I agree with aiv713 that you may get a referral to a therapist, and that's not at all a bad thing. I have found that a lot of doctors can be pretty quick to write a prescription without a diagnosis, while some will avoid prescribing anything and refer you to a psychiatrist for an evaluation. Just remember that if your doctor writes you an Rx for an anti-depressant, it doesn't necessarily mean that you are (clinically) depressed! I know that you are under a lot of emotional stress right now, and that would make it hard for anyone to enjoy or appreciate things the way they used to. For what it's worth, I think you're doing great. ![]() Let us know how it goes. |

Had the appointment, wasn't as bad as I thought. The doctor listened to my ramblings, and asked a lot of questions. He seems to think my issue is more with anxiety than depression. He referred me to a self-help site dealing with cognitive bahvioural therapy (CBT). He also sent me for blood work to check vitamin levels etc., and re-booked me for a follow up appointment in two weeks time. He gave me a referal for a councillor, should I decide to seek one.
So I went for my bloodwork this morning, and printed the step-by-step CBT course information, which I glanced at yesterday but will probably get more into tonight. Step in the right direction I suppose ![]() Also talked to my boyfriend about it all last night. When at the appointment my doctor asked what my bf thought of all this, and I realized I really hadn't talked to him about it, or told him about making the appointment, which I should have. So I told him about the appointment, what the doctor said, and explained a little bit about the anxiety I had been feeling. I was worried I guess that my bf would judge me or see me differently. He was very sweet about it, said he wasn't too sure what to think, but he said he knew a lot of my anxiety probably had to do with him, and he was very sorry about that. |
