I lost something really expensive that someone gave me as a gift, since I seem to be unable to find it anywhere and I'm having an emotional break down over it.

I'm almost sure someone stole it and I can't believe how stupid I am. I can't stop crying about it on and off. It was around $300. I was offered a new one because the person who gave it to me is incredibly generous and although my heart is broken I feel like I deserve to suffer by not having it. I just don't know what to do or how to function normally because this possession was so important to me and one of the best things I've ever owned. My guilt at having it stolen [so it seems right now] is so profound. I just wanted to reach out because I feel so horrible and can't even talk about it with anyone.

I think I would replace it (at my own expense) with a cheaper version (if that's possible). In that way, you will have something similar to use (and can relieve your mind a bit), until the "real" item turns up. You may very well have just hidden it away for safe keeping and will find it someday. If it never turns up, then start saving to replace the original thing. I'm sorry this has hit you so hard. Maybe planning to replace it someday will help.

You're not stupid. You've been unlucky. It's okay to forgive yourself.

I understand how difficult this is on you. I've lost something in the past that someone gave. I never found. I findly got over the guilt but it was not easy. Remembr that it was only a thing and sometimes things come and go in our life and we have to learn to live with. Give youself some slack everybody has lost something that they have cherised. You are not alone.
