I work in a library. It turns out that I got one author's name wrong for a popular book, and I've been going around saying the wrong name for weeks.
The good news is I'm not panicking. But I feel so embarrassed. I have the urge to do something to correct it, and I can't, because it's not possible to correct verbal conversations. And I've probably lost the respect of all the people I've said the wrong name to, because they might have been trying to find the book under the wrong name and not be able to find it, so they'll think that I'm an idiot who doesn't know what she's talking about. How could I have been so stupid? What can I do to fix this? |

Honestly the best thing to do is probably not to beat yourself up over it. From my understanding these sorts of mistakes are pretty common among people, even those without any kind of mental condition.
If someone brings it up you can always just say you made a mistake and got the name wrong and tell them the correct name of the author. I think its much more likely people would realize you made a simple error not assume you're an idiot. |

I agree. People make mistakes. It's okay. Most have forgotten the author's name be the time they left the library anyway. Stop beating yourself up. You're doing great. I'm sure I would make the same kind of mistake if I worked in a library.

You can't cry over spilled milk. I think you already "Fixed" it.

Laugh about it, it didn't cause any harm except maybe some confusion.

Since there really isn't anything to do about it, I'd shrug and forgive myself and move on. I am taking a course at Oxford and posted that the Norman Conquest was in 1266 instead of 1066! My little brain had 1266 on it at the time. Mistakes happen and often don't even get noticed. It is just finding a book, they'll look up the book title later themselves, maybe assume it was not "in"/on the shelves since they could not find it under your name, etc., if they really "need" the book they'll find/figure out what has happened and maybe even assume they heard the name wrong themselves but probably will just realize you had that other author on your brain. Remember, too, they are dealing with this one-at-a-time, they don't know you told 42,000 people the wrong author

I think everyone is saying 'Welcome to the human race', we all make mistakes; a sense of humor helps.
