I am 39 years old and have been numb emotionally for as much of that time as I can remember. Over the last 2 years or so I have had dribbles of emotion that I had never experienced before that kind of seeped through. Now, over the last 6 months, I am drowning in them! I was triggered the other day by an event and I felt as though I was going to explode!! How do I learn to handle all these new emotions, or at least dampen them?
I knew I was numb growing up but I had no idea I was THAT numb! If these feelings was what I was protecting myself from, I'm glad I did!! OMG!!

Oh man!! What a rude awakening haha but welcome to the world of emotions :P
Most of handling emotions come from experience in dealing with them so definitely give yourself some slack for a while. I find that meditation and being able to create your own inner peace on demand can definitely help out quite a bit. Generally though, depending on the emotions, you can dampen them with things like music, talking to people, and thinking about something particularly engaging. For example, if I've made the terrible decision of watching a scary movie before bed I'm super jumpy and paranoid pretty much most of the night but I've gotten better and singing to myself and daydreaming before going to bed and usually by the morning I've gotten over it ![]() But the rest really just depends on the scenario. I think it's more important to over prepare a bunch of different techniques and just pull them out as you need them ![]() Best of luck and let me know if you need more help thinking of stuff! |
