![]() My few friends that I have now don't understand and I think are losing patience with me. My MOTHER doesn't believe that depression is a disease so I avoid talking with her at all costs. Anyway....that's where I'm at today. JES |

Hi there, i kinda understand a bit of what you are feeling, i also liked tons of things and now i don't like anything to be honest. I have been like this for 6 years now and even though i have a few friends left i also feel all alone. It's like you said people without depression just don't get it, i have talked about some things about me with my friends and they were nice and tried to motivate me even tried to explain how i should just forget it among many other things, its nice to see someone care about you and try to help you but if it were that simple i would had been healed a long time ago. If your friends are losing patience with you that means they are not the friends you can really call a friend, i would never lose my patience with a friend of mine in need of help.
About your mother mine is the same, i tried to speak with her too many times about how i feel and she does not understand it she even said things like "you're just shy" eventualy i stopped trying even after i come home from terapy she asks what did the doctor say and i never say what was discussed there. Be strong Jes. |

You're right... they don't get it. But that's understandable. When I'm not deep into depression I don't get it myself. That's just the way it is. There will be, or should be, a few people who will care enough that it doesn't matter if they get it, they will still be there for you. I hope you have at least one person in your life like that.

so many people just don't get it, and even more don't understand just how awful it feels - the quote below is from someone who explains it well, although JK Rowling's are good too
“What people don't understand about depression is how much it hurts. It's like your brain is convinced that it's dying and produces an acid that eats away at you from the inside, until all that's less is a scary hollowness. Your mind fills with dark thoughts; you become convinced that your friends secretly hate you, you're worthless, and then there's no hope. I never got so low as to consider ending it all, but I understand how that can happen to some people. Depression simply hurts too much.” ― Tyler Hamilton "Depression is the most unpleasant thing I have ever experienced. . . . It is that absence of being able to envisage that you will ever be cheerful again. The absence of hope. That very deadened feeling, which is so very different from feeling sad. Sad hurts but it's a healthy feeling. It is a necessary thing to feel. Depression is very different." — J.K. Rowling J.K. Rowling "It’s so difficult to describe depression to someone who’s never been there, because it’s not sadness. I know sadness. Sadness is to cry and to feel. But it’s that cold absence of feeling— that really hollowed-out feeling." — J.K. Rowling |

"Been there, done that" It sounds so familiar! I just went through months of hell feeling the same way!! I finally found the right medicine and slowly the depression is lifting. Don't lose hope.

No. Most people don't understand. However, you'd be surprised at how many people do. I have learned to share bits & pieces regarding my mental health issues, testing the waters, so to speak, in small doses with new people. Most of my family & friends, try hard to understand, to no avail. A part of me glad, a part of me is sad. I am so glad I have found this site! Here, I feel understood & not judged.
