I know I vent on here a LOT but it helps me out cause I can just be honest
![]() I got my hair cut into a pixie cut over the summer. I had really long hair before and I've got compliments on my hair all my life. My mom was always emphasizing that long hair is beautiful and feminine... I always wanted short hair but just wasn't brave enough. Then over the summer it was like, "screw this", and I cut off all my hair. Since then, EVERYONE HAS AN OPINION. I mean, seriously, GOOD GOD. Even my therapist is attributing the haircut to my bipolar disorder! She keeps saying things like "and you cut off your long beautiful hair..." or "is that what you were thinking when you cut your hair off?" I've wanted short hair for years! And I think I look good in it. It just gets really annoying when I can't go through a day without someone sighing and saying "well, at least it'll grow back." Even my boyfriend doesn't like it. It's starting to get to me. I felt so brave and hot and free and unstoppable when I cut it, and now I just feel awkward and weird and like I'm completely un-sexy. I hate that I can let all these little comments get to me like this...I guess it doesn't help with the self-image that I've also gained two inches on my waist ![]() And I did NOT cut it because of the bipolar. Just saying. And I'm just venting...thanks for reading if you got all the way down to here ![]() |

Me thinks that when other people have a problem with your hair it speaks to their inability to accept and embrace change.
If you like your hair then it is all that matters. Having a short hair makes it so much easier to manage. |

I was just talking about this very phenomenon with a friend of mine. He goes to a day program and every little thing he does is used to point toward a symptom of one mental disorder or another. If he wears black, he is depressed....I said no, wearing black just means you feel FAT from all those psych meds! We both had a good laugh!
If cutting your hair off for a pixie cut means you are bipolar, then I must've been bipolar at the age of SEVEN! Geesh! Yes, I had always had long light blonde hair and one day I wanted to chop it all off. (Like my mom was gonna fight me on this one, I mean it was a daily ordeal to keep the knots out of it!) So I cut it all off, and didn't grow it out again until my mid 30's. Its been all sorts of lengths in between but right now is the longest I've had it since I was a young child. Thinking ahead.....I'm getting it cut in the morning. Gasp! I hope that the length that my stylist cuts off doesn't correlate to how bad my mind is! Uhm, no, more like I'm gonna tell him to cut it and make it look good, and if you need to cut more than a few inches, warn me so I can cry and get it out of my system, LMAO. (I bet they'd say I was bipolar for crying over cutting my hair! Seriously, you can never win...) Wear your short hair proudly! Its only hair, and you can always grow it out again. (IF that's what you so desire!) |

When my wife did the same thing with her hair I did not like it at first but within a month or so I realized that it did look good on her and she was still the same woman I married.
Some people just need a little time to adjust to such a striking change. When I cut my hair real short at first I thought it was because of my bi-polar issues but the second time I did it I realized that I just liked shorter hair, so did my wife. Everyone changes throughout life but most people are still afraid of too much change. Ask your therapist why she is afraid to see you change. |

To be fair, I was diagnosed with bipolar long before the hair thing. And it's true, I guess people do need time to adjust to me looking like this. I guess I'm just shocked at how much this has affected me. I've always been the person who doesn't care what others' think, and good luck making me feel bad about myself...but all these comments have REALLY had an effect! It's crazy! I'm not used to reacting this way! Thanks for reading my vent and replying to it, it helped me a lot

Maybe it would help you get back to not letting other's opinions bother you by reminding yourself of this statement -
"Your opinion of me, is none of my business." ![]() |

I know what you mean - i did the exact same thing after I cropping my hair too. I liked it at first but actually found it more hard work in the end...i don't have particularly feminine features either so i felt it didn't look striking in the right way. In the end i just slowly grew it back because i couldn't stand the fuss. Other people weren't particularly vocal about it but i suspect they probably weren't keen either. Shorter hair is a lot more common these days but i find it's still not a style that's generally admired for some reason
![]() I've had mid length hair for a while, i find it more 'now' and just add a spock fringe which is highly uncool but there we go...life's full of contradictions ![]() |

I've never figured out why people think they have the right to comment about other people's hair (or weight or height or age or whatever). It's your hair. Wear it however you want to wear it. Personally I prefer my hair short. It's w-a-y easier to take care of.
I have rather androgynous facial features, am flat chested and most of my life did not have any butt or hips to speak of. People used to (heck they still do!) mistake me for a boy/man. My mother told me it was because of my short hair. Well, I still got "hey fella" comments when I let it grow out. I like it short. I prefer the way it looks short. And like I said, it's way easier to care for. Wash it, comb it and add a little gel and I'm good to go. Hon, you wear your hair however you like and the devil take anyone who doesn't like it! |

I have a friend who cut her hair shorter. I told her how I liked it more when it was longer... but that doesn't matter. It's her hair. Who cares what I prefer? Also her hair type takes a lot of work to maintain, and a shorter style was much easier to take care of. I told her I was happy with whatever made her happy.
I've thought about changing my hair length... but I'm not so keen on people's opinions. And yup, anything and everything can become a symptom if you stare hard enough. |

Wow I think that therapist needs to chill out, just because you have bi-polar does not mean every personal choice you make as to what to do with your physical appearance has to do with it. I have had short hair, and I do kind of like it some people close to me like it when I have it long but its not their hair which they respect at least.
I have long hair now since its been a while, but I will probably try some shorter styles again. I think it seems like people in your life need to have more respect for you and your personal choices...rather than assume any change is due to 'omg bi-polar'.

It's awful that people are being like that! I just got a pixie cut, and even though I'm overweight with a round face, it looks great! Luckily, the people around me who don't like it just don't say anything. I have had a lot of compliments from strangers, though.
