I went to see the movie American Sniper today. For those who havent heard of it, he served 4 tours in Iraq and has the most kills as a sniper in American history. I knew the ending, which I don't want t spoil for you here. But it was so sad. I was in such a good mood before I saw the movie. Now I just am so sad. I feel horrible for the family and for anyone who is directly effected by war. How unsupported soilders are today, how many innocent lives have been lost. It just makes everything else seem so trivial. I don't know why this bothers me so much. I want to stop feeling so empathetic.

Thanks for the input regarding this movie. My husband was wanting to see it but I felt it would be to depressing for me to watch, as I'm really affected by depressing movies.

I saw the movie and it was not one of clint eastwood's better efforts. The ending was very abrupt, i guess because of legal issues. It is a movie about war. Death, loss, grief, guilt and futility. It is not a movie about redemption or the "triumph of the human spirit".

I agree about the ending. It was just upsetting. It was also odd to have the end credits in silence. It was so sad. I'm having trouble coming to grips with the reality of it while also trying not to be interested and wanting to look up information online about him. Should I stay away? My parents just finished his book...both of them said it was gripping.

The good news is that war vets are treated so much better nowadays than they were back in the Vietnam era. Vietnam vets were scorned by much of society and were really screwed when it came to government benefits, employment upon returning to civilian life, etc. In the '90's - 30 years after their service - Viet vets finally began to receive a little bit of recognition from the government in terms of healthcare, disability benefits, and so on. Now Viet vets have so many more advantages, and that has opened the door for war vets of subsequent wars. While the situation is far from perfect, it is much improved.

This film sounds like something that anyone with depression or any type of mental illness should probably avoid. The title alone is a red flag, at least for me.
@PoppyRoad: The conditions for vets has greatly improved and thank goodness for that. My father is a Vietnam vet and only recently has he been able to receive some the assistance and recognition that he deserves. ![]()

Try James Cameron's "Avatar" It is a feel good movie. The Sniper movie is a feel bad movie to start with, and is made to be that way. Clint Eastwood would be better off talking to the furniture at the next Republican Convention.

I plan to see it . I do realize that it is going to have a hug effect on me as my step son is in the military. I do want to find a way of getting a letter/card to his wife. She was very much a part of this movie in showing how spouses are so deeply effected by being with a person in the military.
My hope is that this movie can bring a movement in this country about how our military are treated while serving and once they leave the service. I think everyone should look at there own mental health and decide if this is something that is going to be a good or bad thing. Yeah we often don't know to what degree something effects us.

Sounds like an interesting movie, not something I'd watch if I am having a particularly bad/depressing day sometimes I like a good dark/brutal war movie that reflects the unplesantries/brutality of it...don't know why I have a soft spot for such morbid stuff but have seen plenty war movies and read novels guess I like that sort of topic as much as it disturbs me what humans are capable of...of course movies/books are not a real substitute for real life experiences people have had in those senerios.
Also perhaps some improvements have been made in access to help/services for military veterens, however there are still lots of them who are homeless and barely scraping by so the system is still not adequate. But good if improvements to that are being made....Also perhaps just all over the world governments should really consider when something is really worth sending their own people in to die and kill, as sometimes I can't help thinking its a lot of grim death and destroying of life for a lot of people while anyone running the show gets to sit back behind the scenes, I guess now also in lots of situations humans do not actively go into a war zone they send in drones or whatever to bomb the crap out of the area....is that ethical? Well hell guess war in general is not really ethical.
