Today my dad came home about an hour ago, saying he had gotten laid off from work. I'm so sad, and scared. What if we have to move? I know I gripe a lot about not having access to public transportation where I'm at, but really, I don't want to have to move into a smaller home. We've spent nearly 20 years living where we are now, the longest out of anywhere in my life. I don't want to leave, not really. My folks put a lot of money and hard work into this house. My dad hand installed the patio out back, the brick wall out front, and just put in a new cook top.

I'm genuinely scared....

I hope you don't have to move, either. Wish you good luck.. Maybe talk with your dad and see if there's another solution?

Well, first of all your father got laid off so that means he can collect while he looks for another job. It "is" scary when a parent is out of work, scary for the parent and scary for those who depend on his income. Your father "may" be able to find work somewhere else, may even find something he likes doing better. What you can do is to try to encourage him and help him maintain his self esteem in spite of his having to face this challenge.

I am sure he can collect unemployment. On the positive side he may find better work. What kind of job did he have??

Well, that is scary. Hopefully you won't have to move. I'll bet you won't. Will your dad be looking for another job (I hope)?

Dad said he got a pretty decent severance package, 60 days and $30,000. He knew taking on the particular job he did at work was risky, and that he might not see two years down the road with the company, but it is what it is. He also said he's eligible for rehire, so he may very well just apply for another position at the same company. I know he's already working on his resume and looking at other job options as well. We need the income.

He worked as an IT at the Lowe's Corporate offices.

It sounds like he has marketable skills Artchic. That's a positive and it sounds like he is optimistic which is most definitely a plus.
