I'm up and can't sleep--there was a shooting at the Lincoln diesel college across the street at about 6PM today (while I was on my way home from the mall). I just now read that the victim has died. For some reason that makes it scarier, along with the fact that the shooter is still on the loose. It was drug related so that alleviates my fear a little bit, but it would just take for the person to miss their target. My bedroom window smack faces the parking lot where it happened.
When I was googling about this shooting I discovered that there has been several in my area (East Nashville) in the last few days. I recognized one of the victims who died on the 28th because I would see her on the bus. Also last month the community center my day program sometimes goes to had a shooting where 2 teenagers were injured. Thankfully we weren't there that day. So far fate has put me in the right places at the right times, but every time I hear about another shooting it just terrifies me. I keep telling myself, in all of these cases it was people who knew eachother. I don't know anyone who would want to kill me and I'm not involved in any illegal activity. So I'm safe....right? |

I don't know what the statistics are for being shot but I'd guess the probability is pretty low. Having said that you sound like you're in a part of town that's not as safe. Please be careful and be aware of your surroundings. If you keep up with the news, nowhere is really safe anymore. Things are happening everywhere. We even had a terrorist attack in my city of all places. Stay safe. Hugs coming your way.

We need better gun control.

I agree with you ; however I don't realistically see a solution. Most people who commit crimes do not obtain the guns legally...they either steal them or trade them on the black market. If it were possible to prevent anyone and everyone from going behind our backs we would have done it already.
The fact that drugs are usually involved sort of reinforces this. They ARE illegal, yet people still manage to get them and sell them. |

Infrequent problem here in my province of Canada. You stand a better chance of being shot here by an angry husband than any other manner.
It is knives though that seem to be the weapon of choice here. I feel your discomfort. Tonight is my support group which means I won't get out until after dark. It is a pretty sketchy part of town. I either wait at a bust stop for 20 minutes in fear or leave on foot, get through the area as quick as possible and walk 45min home. There was a stabbing just days ago nearby where I will be. |

Gun Control will cut the number of guns, but not eliminate them. It is a start along with other programs dealing with mental health and drugs.
