Our town had a place called the Institute of Mental Hygiene once, and I thought that was a rather strange title. Mental cleanliness, no "bad" thoughts? Not exactly for me.

I have only heard of this very recently. No other input than this ted talk. Not sure if he was referring to clean thoughts but more along the lines of being kinder to ourselves. (Mind you I have never managed to do that).

I like Emotional Inteligence by the Dalai Lama. (Not sure I spelled that right)

Very interesting. There are times when I wish I could remove my brain, and run it through the dishwasher.

Thanks for sharing the link, Possum. I watched the entire video, and I thought he made a lot of very valid points.

I remember hearing Paul interview him on The Mental Illness Happy Hour some time ago. I'm going to give his book a listen, I think it's on audible and I have a credit, so thanks, Starrsky.

Great video. I can see where I do the positive things he is talking about now. DBT skills have helped & distraction is ALWAYS my favorite skill.

I have to admit I never had negative self talk. I would say that was a "dumb move" but would never call myself dumb. I even got angry when I was first married & my then H thought put down sarcasm was cute. Neither the sarcasm nor he was cute & I gave him the choice to stop or GET OUT. It took some time but he changed.

Very good points made in this video. I always enjoy TED talks....some of the best presentation of information around.

eskie - My ability to be negative towards myself is off the charts. Things I would never think about anybody else I direct towards me. Like I have some kind of internal cesspit. I had great teachers.

Anyhoo - I have ordered the book (face plant) and hope it has pictures in it. Or I will get some-one to help me to put into pictures.

If I think about a tree and the garden and everything that it entails I have no difficulty in understanding life lessons from that. Only very recently I have come to understand that I am not stupid. Who knew?

Hoping that the book will help me to check in with the facts. Going outside now to wait by the letter box for it to come.

. I have KNOWN & we here at PC have known since meeting you here that you are VERY intelligent & very caring.....& that you are a wonderful person!!!!

It is sad that we can't see ourselves as others see us. What we have grown up around has such negative effects.

My issues were more about being self-conscious. I grew up around those feelings along with having a dad who was embarrassing every time he said something.....I wanted to crawl under a rock.....so hiding & being quiet while getting good grades to make sure I was educated though letting out my irritation by fighting in the house where no one would see me was my MO (modus operendi) my whole life until the last 10 years when I have worked on making up for the previous 54 years of life.

Life is so complex

Me either possum220. But I try to deter the negative self talk before it becomes a real problem
