Note to mods: please don't move this post to the school forum. It's about my life (and working and decision making) as well as school. Thanks.

School starts next week. That was my plan for the new year. Take classes. However, at the institution I'm signed up to take classes at, the science class was cancelled due to not enough interest. I didn't even know that I was supposed to express interest.

Anyway, Now they have me signed up for math (which I could definitely get better at) and reading, which is a required course, otherwise I would not take it. My plan though, revolved around science. I was going to explore my interest in that field and see if I liked it. That was my plan. Now there is no science.

Also my advisor is offputting. It's like he doesn't care about having a good relationship with his students and just wants to talk at them. I know that we have to deal with and tolerate certain people. But I'm not even sure this is the right course of action for me anymore.

This is not college. It's a college preparation program. I have a BA from a looong time ago. But I want to get back into the swing of school. I'm currently on disability and the main reason (besides a mh diagnosis) is because I've had a hard time showing up in the past. I've been volunteering religiously though, and that is good. Very good. I could work a small part time job, like try to find one now because I'm showing up to volunteering, if I wanted. Anyway, the classes I'm signed up for, It's free, for people who qualify. Like me.

I'm just lost now. I should really write a pros and cons list.

Pros: I want to go back to school in the future. I want something to do with my time. I want to practice showing up. I really liked interacting with and helping my peers during orientation.

Cons: No science exploration anymore, my advisor is a douche, I'm nervous to start classes and don't know how it will be, I don't really need to take a reading class.

There's this thing in my head saying my reasons for wanting to take the math class are unconventional. I'm not trying to get a job in math. But maybe it would be a good idea to take math.

I think I'm nervous about how all this is going to go if I do it. But I'm also just very unsure that this is still the path for me.

If I didn't do this, I'd most likely volunteer more, dip my toe in working a small pt job, take some online human services classes that are free, And talk to some community colleges in my area about getting financial aid and taking one of their programs in language interpretation or science.

Should I take math? I really could use a brush up. I'm just very nervous and I feel like my reasons for going are unconventional.

Hey those who read to the bottom, I made a decision. Since they don't have science, and that was why I wanted to go, I'm going to withdraw. I'm going to go with my plan b of volunteering more, working pt, taking online classes, and looking into community college.

I'm probably going to feel a loss. These (Plan a) were my plans for quite a while. Maybe it was meant to happen this way.

If math isn't required then avoid it like the plague. If you know you'll have to take a math class at some point, there are online videos that offer tutorials like Khan Academy and such, that you can watch and use for practice and review.

I’m sure you made the best decision. Just remember this: you are worth believing in. I saw you state several times that you were nervous. Don’t walk away from something because you are nervous that you can’t do it. I’m betting that you are far more capable than you’re giving yourself credit for. In flux and not sure what to do
Thanks for this!

Hey that is too bad, I am sorry they cancelled science. If you didn't know you had to express an interest I am wondering how many others didn't either - perhaps they would have had enough people to run the course! I would be disappointed too.

Re maths. I actually think it might be a good idea to brush up if you feel weak in that area. Looking into what is available to you free is a good idea. I will say this, there are some good online resources for maths, many free. May be worth a shot. YouTube also has videos too about processes you may not be sure about. Although I do recommend an in person course if you can source one out - because sometimes if a concept is stuck nothing beats a patient tutor who can explain.

You can definitely do this, my only concern is some of it may be way below your ability because of your BA but I appreciate what you say about showing up and practicing that. It may also build your confidence too.

It sounds like you did amazingly well at showing up with your volunteering and well done on keeping that up - it sounds like a break through. Good luck with your next move.
Thanks for this!
