Hear me out, guys. I really, REALLY hate the word “triggered”. It’s used for everything and it’s thrown everywhere to label someone you don’t like.

Upset that a bully won’t leave you alone? “Triggered”

Calling out someone for bigoted behavior? “Triggered”

Hurt by someone betraying and using you? “Triggered”

Having a bad day in general? “TRIGGERED!!!!”

You see how annoying it gets? It’s tiresome. It removes any wholesome conversations just for some a-hole to act rude and dismissive. Any use of the word “triggered” in that manner is infuriating.

They don’t even know what the word “triggered” actually means. When will this ever end?

No it’s not. It’s used to describe a PTSD reaction, which is very legit and real. I have PTSD which is often triggered by my ex abuser living only 3 streets away from me. Him spying on me and watching my home, which I know he’s doing, triggers a PTSD reaction. I physically shake when I have such a reaction. Triggered is simply an adjective I use to describe my PTSD.

That’s not what I’m saying though. I’m describing how annoyed I am that people don’t know what the word actually means and use it to insult other people.

This is the original appropriate use of the word. I think it can appropriately be used else in mental health like "[stressor] triggered a [symptom/type of episode]" (like "lack of sleep triggered psychosis")

I have seen people on social media use it where something like "shock" or "upset" would fit better though, and I'm not sure but I think that's what cantholdmyrage was referring to.
