It bugs me how overused it is. It used to mean "my PTSD symptoms are being stirred up because this situation is similar to something related to my trauma, so I having flashbacks".

But, too frequently on the web it seems to mean "this has upset me", or "this has ticked me off". I find it diminishing to those people who live with PTSD, triggers, and the associated flashbacks.

Had to get that off my chest! (No, nothing triggererd me or this post!)

Hi Emily,

I can understand that as I also am a survivor of abuse. I don't use the term often, but sometimes a "mental" trigger could be for something that did as much damage as the sexual abuse, if not more.

I think that when someone says they are triggered from being ticked off it really is coming from a place that was a source of trauma for them.

Just my thoughts The word "triggered"

Tranquility

for me a "trigger" is something that brings up the pain or memories... of the abuse, the losses, whatever........ i wouldnt think of it as just something that irritates me or anything. i don't have ptsd as far as i know but there is a lot of painful stuff in my past that i sure don't need to be reminded of........

good post. i think "triggered" can be related to most mental health issues. i don't see how it can only belong to a certain group. it can mean different things to different people and still be the "same".........
