If you or someone you know has experienced five or more symptoms listed below for a period of two weeks or more, a thorough evaluation by a qualified mental health professional is recommended.
Symptoms of Major Depression
  • Sadness, anxiety, or "empty" feelings
  • Decreased energy, fatigue, being "slowed down"
  • Loss of interest or pleasure in activities that were once enjoyed, including sex
  • Insomnia, oversleeping, or waking much earlier than usual
  • Loss of weight or appetite, or overeating and weight gain
  • Feelings of hopelessness and pessimism
  • Feelings of helplessness, guilt, and worthlessness
  • Thoughts of death or suicide, or suicide attempts
  • Difficulty concentrating, making decisions, or remembering
  • Restlessness, irritability or excessive crying
  • Chronic aches and pains or physical problems that do not respond to treatment
source: National Institute of Health Publication No. 97-4266 and 99-3561

What is shown above are the symptoms of clinical depression. The symptoms are not necessarily caused by external events, but external events can definitely trigger depression.

Depression doesn't have to be caused by one or even a series of "bad" or traumatic events (although it certainly can be). Mine was the cumulation of years of all kinds of poor self-esteem, negative thinking patterns, and wonky brain chemistry. If you think you're depressed, or if you're not sure, leacon's list is definitely something to consult; otherwise you can always see a doctor or mental health professional, who would be able to help you figure out what's going on as well.

I often feel like I'm lost inside myself. In fact, when my depression kicks in, it feels like I withdraw so far into my own head that I can't really experience the outside world any more. I just don't notice anything but my problems or failings, and I have a warped sense of almost everything, which can make even simple things like doing groceries or going for coffee with a friend feel like a tremendous effort. If you think you're depressed, take action to see if that's what it is. The earlier you get help for it, the better.

Depression can be a completely biochemical thing happening with the body without any precipitating event.

Yeah, sure sounds like the familiar depression story to me...

A psychiatrist is a great place to go for help, if you have access to one...a psychiatrist can point you in the right direction...maybe you can overcome the bad feelings with just psychotherapy, maybe some meds would make a big difference.

Don't be afraid to look for help. Getting help doesn't mean you're crazy... The earlier in life you tackle this the better, in my opinion.
