Hello everyone - kinda stumbled across this web-site and was browsing the area here on depression. I was diagnosed a few years back and went thru a year long intensive therapy and was put on medication. After a few trials I have been on Effexor XR for quite some time now (at least 3 yrs). Initially I was on 225 mg a day and now am on 150mg. Not sure how to explain this but lately I have felt the strong desire to get off the meds completely. Now I don't plan on doing this until I talk with my psychiatrist and with Effexor you need to wean off it but I was wondering if anyone else felt this way before? Aproximately a year and 1/2 ago I tried to get off the meds but it didn't turn out very well so I got back on the previous dosage and except for the lowering to 150mg I have been on Effexor XR ever since. I just feel that its time to get off and while I have ALWAYS to get off the meds eventually I also accepted the fact that I could be on them for forever. I'm leary of this desire to get off the meds as I not sure I understand WHY this seems to have come up...anyone have any thoughts?? ;-)

In my case, I felt really good for a while, my coping skills improved, and my support network seemed strong, so I thought it was a good idea to at least try. Are you seeing things falling into place or is your ability to handle things significantly better than it was when you went off the meds last? Could be wrong, but that's probably the meds. There's no harm trying to wean off under a doctor's watchful eye if you've got friends or family around to be on the lookout, too, but if you have a sense of urgency to get off the meds, you might want to ignore that. Like you said, you have ALWAYS, right?

Hoping you find your answers.

(((AzBearin))) As long as you are under doctors care it might be worth a try. Good luck, hugs for your day.

That is a tough dilemma.

If you are functioning well and feeling stable and aren't having bad side effects...

On the one hand--Why rock the boat???

But on the other hand--You don't ever want to take medicine if you don't have to!
