I realized today that in my mad desire to get back to school, to functionality I completely missed a crucial step.

If you have diabetes you go to a doctor. The doctor "fixes" it.
If you have broken an arm same thing.
If the doctor doesn't fix the problem then you go to another doctor. If the doctor sets the arm incorrectly it's the same problem all over again!

Right now I don't have a doctor for my mental troubles. On the books I do. But in reality I don't have SOMEONE I CAN GO TO FOR HELP. Someone who can help me get better.

Could you guys please give me some support and or reminders as I try to find that person? I need to do it pretty quickly. I'm a bit scared of it though.

Turquoissea~

I experienced a similar problem a few years ago. I told my family doctor that I was not getting adequate treatment from my local psychiatrist. She suggested I call one of the major medical centers at one of the universities within a few hundred miles. Since I have been seeing a doctor there, I have been much better! Yes, it is inconvenient. But you do what you have to do.

I think that there really are plenty of excellent psychiatrists who really care and want to help people, but it seems that they are so hard to find! It took me a while to get a doctor who was a good match with me, but it was worth it!

Best of luck to you. Again, I'd suggest searching somewhere out of town, but in driving distance.
Thanks for this!

You deserve the help you need. Keep asking for it until you get it. If the first time you don't get what you need, move on to the next name on the list. Trust your gut.
Thanks for this!

Hi Turquoisesea,

You could contact the New York State Health & mental hygiene department. They have helplines and support so should be able to guide you in the right direction.

But theres plenty of support here if you need it. And theres no limit on posting. So if you feel you need a boost of support before you start the day, or after you have finished for the day then rock up here and get some.

I really hope things improve for you and that you get a therapist who is "there" for you, instead of looking at the clock all the time and only pretending to listen.

Take care,
((((hugs))))
Rhiannon

If you are looking for a therapist, PC can help.

Go to the homepage and type therapists in the search box. Then type your zip code.

It will give you a list of Ts in your area, what their specialties are, what insurance they take, and if they do sliding scale.

Good luck in finding a doctor.

Just like in other relationships, finding the right T or pdoc has to be the right match. We are friends or romantic partners with certain people and not with others. There are reasons why we choose certain people to be in our life and avoid others. Sounds like your current situation is an example of a relationship that is not a good match. The right T or pdoc is out there, it can just take time to find them. Good luck in your search and I will be thinking positive thoughts for you!
Thanks for this!

Well the good news is that I contacted a T and have a first appointment on December 1st. I dunno if it will work out, I'm mixed about her by the phone contact I've had.

I probably will give her 2-3 sessions minimum to get a better idea of what shes like, and what our goals would be.

Berries, thank you for telling me about that I had no idea! I am definitely going to use this tool, because I really want to be finding the RIGHT person in all this.

Thank you everyone for the support in this first step

If your new doctor doesn't work out for you, I don't know how far you are from New York City, but Columbia University has a program for their teacher's college at the Dean Hope Center. They see you once a week on a sliding scale. If you would like more information, just let me know.

((((((((((turquoisesea)))))))))Hang in there sweetie ... you will be fine, lots of love and support here, the university sounds like a good idea too ... even if it's a short term measure until you find someone? I think most universities, here in the UK anyway offer support ... good luck and please keep us posted Ophelia xx
